Attributing casualties from a dam break as energy-related is a stretch. The vast majority of dams are built for flood control. Energy production just helps pay the bills. It's not the 'purpose' of the dam.

You mean like Ford's Mustang Mach-E, that starts at $40,000? I'm not sure what purpose the hyperbole serves here.

I don't recall who first relayed this to me but I believe the answer to the question in the title is "path dependence". Modern (US) health insurance started off as hospitalization insurance and was originated by hospitals th

This could only be said by someone who is completely disregarding the coercive power of a police "interview". There is always, always, a subtext of "if you don't wish to cooperate, I may need to exercise my discretion to

No, it won't. Austin is one of the most gerrymandered regions of the country. I live in downtown Austin. My congressman is Chip Roy, an ultra-right-wing MAGA nonsense spewing idiot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

I believe they modeled the behavior of a model of a neuron, not an actual neuron. Models are intrinsically simplifications of the reality.

Let me reverse your question: why would you use "how much oligarchic wealth someone has" or, possibly, "how intent on money laundering the buyer is", to determine aesthetic value? Because that's how art is sold toda

The wiki page says ctags was part of the 3BSD release, which would put it about 1979. My memory isn’t good enough to recall which release of emacs picked up support. I think there was a find-function key binding for lisp code before ctags,

I once made the mistake of making an offhand remark about people "aren't sitting around watching the dogs channel" in a meeting. Oh, did I get some dirty looks from that ill-considered thought that was spoken aloud.

Only someone totally ignorant of the difference between a vaccine and a pain drug, in terms of how they are tested and approved, would use 'what about vioxx' as an indictment of vaccines.

There is a really interesting example of the role of the surface vegetation for groundwater in Bamberger Ranch[1] in Central Texas. Central Texas was massively overgrazed by cattle in the 1800's and 1900's, and the ecosystem was c

The role of cellular immunity isn’t as clear. What would probably make a big difference, though, would be mucosal immunity given by a nasal vaccine. Get those antibodies located at the point of infection and they can get to work earlier.
