IIRC, early touch screens were resistive, rather than capacitive, which didn't support multi-touch. without multitouch, no pinch. the interface has existed in movies for a long time and it just took bringing down the cost of capacitive touc

if you've got an old computer that you're trying to make useful, it's a lot easier (for most users, who can't config the alt-installer) to just download and burn xubuntu.

Well, I'm curious who wins. And why they had to extend the submission deadline by several months. for the record, the patent system is broken and i doubt humanity benefits as much as in a system with more cooperation.

100 acres is relatively "massive" compared to existing American solar installations. But it's really not that large an area in the industrial sense. I searched "acres refinery" to get an idea of how much land an oil refinery takes up (requ

tldr: more efficient WIFI = longer battery life I think maybe some of you missed the part where they say: While the back-end elements of wireless have been digitized long ago, the front end—phase modulation, frequency synthesis, and RF pow

Pretty sure I wanted an analog tuner/video VLB-card in the 90s. Couldn't afford one, but I imagine the people who bought them, did this stuff with them.

2008, why didn't the patent office say this is basically Tivo? Is there really anything new here? It was filed in 2002, but Tivo (and diy copycats) were already out in 2000, iirc.

These are probably low earth orbit satellites, still protected by the geomagnetic field and their orbits wouldn't spend much time in the Van Allen belt. To be safe, I imagine they gave the phone a tinfoil hat.

I am not an engineer, but seems a retrofit like this adds un-sprung weight which increases wear and changes handling. How about put the motors in a new differential? It'd take a larger casing, but you could apply the electric torque to eac

Still sounds a lot like "the hustler mindset" to me. I like the comments from that page. Here's one I'll cherry pick: Indranil Roy Chowdhury wrote: Seems like Jugaad has become a fad these days as I keep hearing the term every now and then

I think we call that "hustling" in America. It is common amongst poor folks around the world and can lead to run-ins with the authorities. It seems more like treading water than a path to independence, to me. It appears to me that the mos

Just because it's written in js on node doesn't mean it's just for that tool stack. As someone who would like to hack on his own IDE and spends most of his time working with web languages, i think it's a cool project.

Sprint kinda did the same thing. Seems they hid it better tho -- http://www.sprint.com/spendinglimit 4th paragraph mentions the charge. Anyone who didn't sign up for auto-pay is charged an extra $5 a month, even if you pay on time.

I recently found this site useful. I wrote a script that glued together some commands to be run by cron. Then the requirements grew and the script's complexity grew, and grew, and before long I learned that bash scripts support functions.

I think the argument here is that we inherited a country which always paid it's debts. If we decide we don't HAVE to pay our debts, then this is a different country, the world will recognize this and we'll find it more painful to borrow. I
