Ah even before the internet was widely used you would go to the library and copy stuff out of encyclopedias. It just took longer :)

At least with Objective-C it's pretty trivial to just use C or C++ or whatever in most places and Objective-C minimally. Swift is a little more of a headache in that regard.

Right but deciding not to use Google services doesn't cut you off from everybody you know. My family uses Messenger, my US friends use Instagram, my European friends use Whatsapp... Even though I don't have a Facebook profile anym

The difference between the old ceo and the new ceo is pretty stark, at least on a superficial - just looking at the profile pics & names - level. Like the original CEO uses an IRCish internet handle and a bad picture taken on a webcam,

I want to say, as a guy who is not much of a web developer but is trying to make a web site, css is f'ing frustrating. For example I found a CSS-only stylized dropdown list, which is great. Why should I have to use Javascript to styliz

OTOH Reddit also enforces time as a limitation on posts, just on a slightly slower scale than Facebook. For example "necroposting" isn't really a thing that's possible with a Reddit (or HN) model. Nor are threads that a

I think you're being a little bit disingenuous here. Not everybody only subscribes to a bunch of niche subreddits with good moderation. A lot of the larger / less strictly moderated subreddits are filled with toxicity, bots, and

Unless your middle name is "Lee", in which case stick with First Last because you're gonna sound like a "quiet guy who keeps to himself" any other way.

Aren't "locked-in" rates typically renegotiated every 5 years or so? So if rates keep increasing the entire time some folks might be in for a rude awakening in 2021...

I'm not sure why the article is speculating about a "seismic" change. Apple (and Microsoft and Google have followed) has established a pattern for their OS evolution: yearly incremental updates.

Basically the answer is "no". If they're not willing to help with visas, there is no legal way for someone who isnt a citizen or GC holder to stay in the states for 3 months and work.

I wouldn't really consider HN particularly left wing. It's fully capitalist and any thread that discusses social issues is full of libertarians. Anything that has a faint whiff of anti-capitalism is promptly removed from the fro

I was curious about the backlog being a century so I did some googling around and it looks like a user on quora did a bit of reading and math and figured that an Indian person applying today can expect a wait of 100-150 years to get a GC.
