I have a Nest an generally love it. I upgraded to it from a previous "smart thermostat" mostly for new-technology and to support some friends who were working on Nest when it launched. I have kind of an unusually-shaped house and

For a while my way to unwind after a rough day at work was to fire up GTA4, turn off the cell phone (to pause the story mode) and just drive around like a lunatic and blow stuff up. It's actually surprising just quite how effective thi

Kudos to him for recognizing his personal bias and also to not allow it to color his views of research. This is a hot button topic for many on both sides of the issue, and it's rare to see someone - even in the research field - who is

My first thought is I would never get into a personal vehicle if the decision to "sacrifice myself for the greater good" was not my choice. [1][2] How do you program "greater good" in a split-second decision making scena

Like others here I'm a little short on sympathy for the author specifically, if Google bans one app, I think I'd be upset about it enough to not just let it go under the assumption I was innocent - obviously someone or something a

The platform I learned to develop on was a very small cellphone; learning to live in tight resources is a skillset that sadly not enough people practice. Even today on much larger systems I still out of habit minimize code and resources mor

The mods could auto-flag this site and it wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit. As much of a space nerd as I admittedly am, these science-lite and content-free (and not typo-free) articles don't add anything to HN at all.

A competent Hiptop user could easily type 60-70 wpm on the keyboard without too much trouble. Clever use of the autotext dictionary could easily fake out 80wpm or more by replacing "txt spk" with actual words and phrases.
