At least in my area, people start out programming on a Mac, get tired of the endless workarounds they need to do the most basic Unix development, then just set up a Linux VM. Then, when it's time for a new laptop, they just buy a Thinkpad.

I use Facebook, somehow I managed to get a federal job, even after multiple background checks of varying thoroughness. The big thing a lot of these checks look for is how susceptible you might be to outside pressure. Who cares if you got dr

Ubuntu is, for me, Debian plus an unending parade of annoyances slapped on top. Mistyped a command? Let's wait 5 seconds for the prompt to come back because Ubuntu is going to search the repositories for packages that may match "friefox". W

That repo is extremely out of date. The lsub.org guys ( http://lsub.org/ls/nix.html ) decided they'd prefer to roll their own "code review" system, and the nix-os repo was essentially abandoned. Apparently they've recently decided to stop u

Don't announce your project until you at least have something going. The empty repo at https://github.com/kerlnel/kerlnel ? That should at least have enough code in it to boot something , even if it's just a "hello world!" that doesn't h

I just wanted to point out that (hopefully) these Twitter guys were posting because they truly disliked the project, rather than out of misogyny as the GP speculates. It bothers me too when people here and elsewhere assume every single nega

Submitting pull requests is for code you actually consider worthwhile/useful. These guys didn't seem to think it even has a reason to exist, so why would they try to improve it? It'd be like saying, "Well, if you don't like my toothbrush fo

The majority of HN readers seem to have assumed that the author is male. I assumed the same thing for most of it, before getting suspicious at the non-joking use of "sobbing". I wouldn't be surprised if these Twitter posters made the same a

You can try breadboarding if you have a simple through-hole circuit. If things are SMD-only, you'll have more trouble.

I forgot about that part, I was thinking back to my experiences at a hardware startup. The battery circuitry was only a small portion of the board, but it was the most complicated electrically.

The hardest part is probably going to be power. A lot of the rest is just wiring up a bunch of components, which is complicated but not electronics-heavy. Datasheets are your friend. My first suggestion is to get a microcontroller like a PI

You probably won't be doing pointer arithmetic in C#. It's been about 5 years since I wrote any C#, but I don't remember any... mostly I remember it as a Java clone, which would preclude pointer arithmetic.
