I built a 7-key chording keyset based on the Spiffchorder. It should be adaptable to almost any configuration. Mine came out a bit blocky and hard to use due to crappy buttons.

My colleagues and I often lament how gcc is just so much smarter than all of us. Usually after spending a day figuring out why our code wasn't working, only to discover that gcc was doing something "clever".

So what you're saying is that these non-TeX users are unlikely to successfully solve P=NP? I'd say that sort of upholds his premise.

I thought the time saved by lifehacks was usually devoted to writing blog posts about how you've been doing X for 3 days now and it's amazing.

The reason for Emacs using a different set of key bindings (C-u catches me all the damn time) is that Emacs had its genesis outside of Unix. Emacs keybindings and the endless crusade to force "info" as a "man" replacemen

Does it have any of these things today? I ask of genuine interest. I've been bitten pretty often by the lack of threading.

Ah, that explains Ruby's concurrency situation. (It's a joke, I understand the difficulty involved with concurrency in interpreted languages. But given that both Elisp and Ruby are well-known for having trouble with threading, wel

After the GSA stunt a few years ago, you bet conference budgets have been cut. Departments are given a set budget for each conference--if I remember right, the DOE allocates $100k max per conference. Sounds like a lot, but then you see what

That was my question coming out of the article: why exactly do we want quinoa? The native Americans stopped growing it because it didn't yield well enough. Modern farmers have had trouble growing it here in the US. And I've neve

I went to "theSummit" last year as a speaker. The speakers were all asked to wear blinky badges so people could find them and ask about their talks. Unfortunately, in proper party fashion, they had the DJ playing crap music so lou

We had buses to do exactly that. The "sports bus" departed at 6 p.m. every day; there weren't a lot of the buses, because not everyone did afterschool activities, but everyone who needed a ride got on the appropriate bus (eas

Do you know the origin of the name, "New Jersey approach"? It was these guys. These guys invented the New Jersey approach. Go is the result of 40 years of OS and programming language work primarily done at Bell Labs in Murray Hill

It's a (rather poor) take on the name "Go". Boldly GOing. But by all means, ascribe it to some mental failing of Go programmers, any more so than say Scala programmers.

The success of the Valvemobile will be in no way affected by the hood ornament, I suppose. To un-knot the twisted metaphor, I'm saying Valve already got past the wailing 10 years ago. Their Steam model already enjoys widespread success
