I don't like putting homebrew into /usr/local, because many other installers put stuff in there, often incorrectly, and it sort of acts as a bit of a dumping ground. I install to /homebrew and it works fine. homebrew bit

I'm not at all convinced that Smalltalk-80 was the apotheosis of computing environments; both Windows and Unix are, cockroach like, exceedingly good at staying alive. Neither is fun to use, but nobody's put selective pressure on

Well, to be fair, in 2002 it was far from clear that there were going to be millions of C# programmers.

Keep in mind that much of what seemingly makes Powershell so great on Windows is inapplicable in a Unix shell environment. So there's still some juvenile "M$ hyuck hycuk" nonsense, but there's also some pretty spot-on di

Much of the time that PowerShell is mentioned here is in the context of a discussion about how nun-punchingly awful the Unix shell is, and what could possibly replace it. I have never used PowerShell, so I have nothing to add to those discu

Yeah, I don't doubt it. I've been spoiled by living close to the data I want to download. I imagine that people at the far end of attenuated links would have a very different experience.

Conceded. I still think the ae ligature in "Unix daemon" is a misspelling or usage failure.

It's a new coinage, after the ae ligature had fallen into disuse. Would you expect that "browser" should be spelled "browƒer"?

It's a mistake from hypercorrection. It's not a historical spelling, it's a misspelling.

It's like "virii" or "octopi" or other hypercorrect mistakes. EDIT: "viruses" and "octopuses", please. Maybe possibly potentially "octopodes."

Take it a step further: why is there even still a root user? Separation of privileges doesn't require the user abstraction.

This is true, and also, I think it's perfectly likely that nVidia is trying to soak people buying with other people's money.

Think about who makes the browser, and what their interests are. Mozilla and Google both are 100% creatures of the advertising world (in the former case, indirectly through their search box deals) and have a vested interest in selling you o
