The product's design is the tool you use to distinguish. Say that, unbeknownst to you, 90% of your users are non-native English speakers. Is a non-native English speaker "stupid" because they misinterpret the simple English i

Bloom's paper largely focuses on when/how students get feedback and less on the particulars of the assessments. For example, maybe mastery learning works (in part) because it helps teachers pay attention in a group setting more li

That's not how conspiracy theories and magical thinking work. I grew up around folks who thought fluoride was in the water to brainwash us. I had an English teacher who thought the major news media was hiding the fact that we discovere

You're right! I confused the deductive system/language w/ the theory. Oops. Something like Presburger Arithmetic would've been a proper example.

There are two other conditions/premises that, arguably, play a bigger role in Gödel's theorems: 1. The theory must be strong enough to do a certain amount of arithmetic 2. The axioms of the theory must be computably enumerable So,

Maybe, but I don't really see what that gets you: 1. In an ultrametric space like the p-adics (ℚₚ), two open balls are either totally disjoint or one is a subset of the other 2. In an ultrametric space like the p-adics (ℚₚ), every ball

I think the one-dimension "conformist" / "non-comformist" axis isn't useful. We all participate in orthodoxies that we're blind to (or at least not fully aware of). The only questions are "Which ones?

Absolutely! You can see it in this thread, even. There are folks excited by the prospect of using the phrase "aggressively non-conformist". pg is providing memetic ammunition for the very "culture wars" he claims he'

If you write several essays about "the way society works" and they consistently resolve to a protagonist who happens to be very much like yourself, you're probably writing about your own mind, not society.

When I can, I actually forbid my students from using flash cards. If they don't have the scaffolding to make a concept stick, time is better spent building the scaffolding (IMO).
