Yes, it's just business. I agree that you shouldn't ascribe the emotion of "love" to Microsoft, or any large corporation. But in the same vein, I don't think it's fair to equate them with a "junky giving free dope samples to kids".

> Ten years on, ask yourself, "What value do you bring to the table?" if you don't know, that is a big problem. Is there a reason you shouldn't be asking yourself that after every year you spent at a company?

This blog is as personal a blog as a Microsoft employee can get without hosting one themselves. As a Microsoft employee, I could have my own blog on blogs.msdn.com - but the signup process was more complicated than Posterous, so I don't.

The primary advantage for me is that purchasing a MacIvory gave me a legal license to run Genera. This is important to me because I work for Microsoft, a company that pays my salary by selling licenses to software. I've also been told that

You're probably right. I'll bet I'm over thinking this. I like the idea of sending him something nice. I'll do that.

No, I'm not sure. That's what David Schmidt told me a year or so ago when I bought my MacIvory from him. It seems very plausible though, given John's background.

You're right, it's a weak connection right now. I could be wrong, but I'm seeing JavaScript getting pushed "down" the stack. People are doing things like implementing the DOM in pure JavaScript. I'm also very interested in seeing what peopl

Reading the rant from John Rose in the preface to THE UNIX-HATERS Handbook [1] was pretty eye-opening to me. The world that John is complaining about is the world that I've spent many years living in, quite happily too! How is it that we lo

I tried to contact him to ask that exact question. He didn't answer my email. I've thought of just calling him. But I'm intimidated of him to be honest. He wrote the webserver that ran whitehouse.gov during the Clinton administration, I can

I'm 29. The first used Genera a few years ago. The "Help" button the Symbolics machines blew me away. I've used software with great built-in help. It's impressive to see it system-wide. Another thing that I still find really impressive is h

Sure! This is actually a good reminder that I should write something more in-depth on this topic, since most of what I think I know is based in large parts on oral-history with some conjecture. Lisp Machines started at MIT, some of that cod

While I agree with you in principle on not "fiddling with very old environments", I had to try out Genera after hearing from two separate people that Lisp Machines were the best computers they ever used. One guy was a VP at Yahoo. The other

I ended up purchasing a Symbolic MacIvory because of this blog post. They aren't cheap! I wrote about my experiences learning to use Genera here: http://genera.posterous.com/ - which reminds me, I need to spend more time with Genera.

I'm glad you mention this because that was the basically the motivation for me to build this tool in the first place. I was selecting a DNS host for the startup I was at and was wondering: "what DNS host do all my friends use?". I found mys

Agreed. I'm working on updating domain-profiler to better detect PaaS providers like Heroku, GAE, and Azure. In the meantime, you can see who's using Heroku by looking for domains that have an SSL certificate with a certificate type of "*.h

You're correct, currently the "Web Host" is determined solely by what shows up in the A records for the domain. I've been working on updating the profile to determine the host based on where the HTML is ultimately served from, along with so

This topic comes up every time I run this report. The reasons why people don't like GoDaddy are covered in both of the previous discussions on this report. Well worth reading! http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2080469 http://news.ycomb

I generated a report specifically to show YC startups that were using GoDaddy: https://raw.github.com/jpf/domain-profiler/master/ycombinato... The exodus away from GoDaddy stopped as soon as they reversed their support of SOPA.
