This is meant for designers but inspired me to change my practices: http://vimeo.com/22053820 Its titled: "fuck you, pay me" The video isn't actionable advice but worth a look. If I were in your shoes I'

I don't understand the point you are trying to make. You're saying implementing linked lists are good only if you are trying to hire recent college graduates who will prepare for an interview?

Stupid easy. Add up what you ordered, write name of card you are using to pay on the back with the amount. Pass the check to the next person.

I've done everything from paying for group t-shirts to sports teams to shared vacation homes and I've never thought the problem was hard enough to need an app for it.

Nitpicker: MVC is part of ASP.NET. You probably meant ASP.NET Webforms in your first paragraph. ;)

>Nancy just has a nicer API. In your opinion. A lot of older developers don't like the Func<>iness of some of these newer frameworks. Just something to consider.

Whats funny is in my experience even MS fanboys hate WCF. ;)

I have a dozen WCF projects under my belt. WCF is fine until you need to extend it. Nancy, MVC, Web Api are much easier to extend. Plus WCF needs all sorts configuration stupidity which alternatives just don't have.

Oh and the mechanics analogy is dumb. There is one way to change a break pad and potentially infinite ways to create a website.

I've dealt with this for 12 years now. Throw away your idealism and artistic ego. You aren't getting paid because you are some grand wizard of digital design and your vision matters. You're getting paid because you solve that

@Goronmon, right, but if it comes down to giving a fantastic cook/chef/server/manager a $2 raise or losing them you'll figure it out.

Wages/margins/costs/expenses are far more elastic than the zero sum game the author presents. If you need to pay somebody $2 more an hour the money can come from more places. Increase a drink price, decrease tomato quality,
