As an occasional and reluctant user of C++, this is my comment of the week.

We don’t, the latest commercial technology consists of disposable sensors that require a probe to penetrate the skin. Whoever brings something non-invasive (and reusable) to market will be raking it in whether they’re apple or not.

I think it's more likely they'll be re-mortgaged while still occupied via 'equity release', or sold outright to pay for elder care. Either way, I'd expect relatively little to end up being passed on via inheritance.

No. That's a voluntary arrangement where families support their elderly relatives, or where society consents to support the elderly via taxation and redistribution. This is a situation where the older generation have an economic near-m

Reasonable is not the term I would use. I've read elsewhere that the rate of home ownership in the UK for 30-somethings is half that of 15 years ago, which is half that again of 30 years ago. Extrapolate that to this distribution and i

A full 76% of housing wealth owned by those aged 50+. I knew there was a generational economic conflict of sorts, but I never imagined it was this bad. These are our landlords. Making the older generation a class of rentiers who maintain th

It is. Angular 7 and .NET core are a particularly good pairing. I’d go further and say this is a good combination for any team who want sound frameworks with out-of-the-box functionality, without having to research the ecosystem and discrim

The author misses the point. Panpsychism is in part a response to the hard problem of consciousness, the question of how subjective experience arises from non-experiencing matter. If consciousness at some basic, low level is instead a prope

It would help if the MBP were actually a professional level device instead of being a souped-up, hyper-expensive consumer laptop. That would mean more ports, a higher minimum spec, and the ability to upgrade the internals. The touchbar coul

Maybe so, but holding out is a strategy that could only be pursued by the bigger players, the smaller ones would have to cave and release via the App Store.

Web assembly is definitely a threat to apple’s app revenues, though maybe not an existential one. Given that apple are already experiencing a slowdown, and big names like Netflix are trying to avoid the “apple tax”, I’d expect to see them f

Very well, maybe not everyone who would describe themselves as on the left would have this belief, but in my experience it is very common.

Potentially, but you would need to define what is meant by earning. Is earning defined by subjective difficulty? Is ability already part of the concept of earning, such that what we find virtuous about earning is in part the capacity to do

You’re simply wrong. Believing in nurture over nature is a common belief on the left.

I think individuals on the left have a variety of beliefs on the subject.

I never mentioned leftists, I said words to the effect of assuming a blank slate is one of the implicit assumptions of left-leaning world views. Taleb can share such a belief without explicitly being on the left.

IQ is one of those topics which is, unfortunately, inescapably political. If important psychometric traits, like intelligence and personality, are highly heritable, then one of the implicit assumptions of left-leaning points of view is unde

From the title I assumed that the author was going to make a different point: that understanding a problem does not mean that said problem can be represented by a convex function, i.e. it still may have many local optima that a problem solv

Presumably because that’s just a matter of scale. The calculation didn’t turn out wrong, the machine just isn’t powerful enough to calculate it. All of this work is proof of concept for more powerful devices down the road, the point isn’t t

Using caps isn’t a substitute for having a point, nor is it a refutation of the effort involved to make three separate native apps instead of one. Also you’re not supposed to use caps here. I don’t think it sucks, most users don’t think it
