I expect the same issues are present in a field like organic synthesis. It takes cleverness and skill to develop synthesis procedures, and I'm sure a lot of people graduate with PhDs who aren't particulalry great at it. Hmm, maybe

You're right that programming isn't science, but parts of it are complicated in a way similar to math, with many intricate components that interact in complex ways. People with only a BS (or no degree) regularly get jobs writing

Some people, when confronted with a problem, think "I know, I'll use MATLAB." Now they have two problems. (Apologies to jwz.)

I wonder why this is so different in CS, where it's much more feasible to get a senior highly-technical job without formal credentials. What's the source of this cultural difference?

I have installed Ubuntu on an endless sequence of random laptops without trouble. You may have better luck with these popular "desktop" distros like Ubuntu since they get a lot of testing on typical consumer hardware.

Try Eigen, you'll agree that NumPy is an array library that had linear algebra support thrown in as an afterthought.

Huh? Isn't it a question of whether you are doing matrix or array ops, so the type system is the issue? I have rarely needed to do elementwide multiply on matrices, and if I do, in Eigenproblem I can just call mat.array() to get an Arr

I bet it intentionally lowballs so you're then forced to enter a value that makes sense. Correcting a bad estimate will probably be psychologically easier than coming up with it from scratch.
