This is not much of a computational survivalism, if you need to install extra software on target machine. I mean, you might as well install Python. Do your task with PowerShell or DOS batch, and then this might cut it as computational survi

These are very good points. The beverages in the microkitchen are a public good not your own property. Hence it’s not the same as “not donating to charity” as you’ve so well described. I’d also add (leaving any empathy questions aside), tha

I like how the person argues how hoarding the bottles is good for _them_, hence it’s OK. I bet their face is getting orange. “It saves me time, so it’s not rude” jfc

And you can get an offline account with Windows if you're offline. Granted it's not transparent enough. Thing is, what Apple is trying to achieve with iCloud is exactly the same as what MS is trying to achieve: bind you to a singl

Today you still can use and create an offline account. If you’re offline. People here don’t read the original thread.

Are we going to talk about the absolutely ridiculous amount of ads in this article?

My usual way of doing this, is by spitballing an estimate with the team, multiplying it by 2.5 or 3, inventing some meaningless milestones and gantt-charts and presenting it to an outraged management. Then we haggle down to something realis

This is pretty poor behavior from the bank. But for it to be a form of control, their actions must lead to you doing something what they want. And I don’t see that here.

Major international banks have entire payment systems implemented in PL/SQL. I’m talking 2-3kloc procedures and thousands of them.

Yes, there was a brexit referendum. In 1975. For some reason, the ERG oligarchs decided they need another one.

That’s a bit of confusing things. My argument is that regardless of how these products are funded, they ARE funded and their target segment is different based on that source of funding. MacOS is a premium product. Windows 10 Home edition is

Sorry, I didn’t mean to say you were mocking. But the whole narrative on HN does feel like that and is essentially a tribal, condescending thing. I would think differently if I saw the same amount of criticism towards other products which c

They have enough alternatives. Free alternatives at that! If they don’t switch, then that’s their choice and they are obviously fine with it. The whole “Windows telemetry bad” meme is mostly just an excuse for a flame war.

The price is included in the price of the whole product. I mean, it’s not the price of materials that dominate Apple’s pricing. And you actually have to pay money to people developing the OS. So no, it’s not free.

It doesn’t mean it’s free. When you buy a Mac Book you usually dish out around 1500 USD at the very least, where the cost of materials is at best 1/3 of that. You mostly pay for the design, the OS and the privilege. You can get a PC wi

Counterpoint: users are mostly fine with telemetry on average. Users ARE compensated by a cheaper OS license in case of Windows 10.

macOS is way more expensive as well. Compare it with Windows 10 Pro for a fairer price point and ads are not a problem all of a sudden.

Obviously: we don’t care. Apple and Microsoft do roughly an equal amount of telemetry. Ubuntu has telemetry. Obviously most people are fine with telemetry. Apple charges WAY more for its OS than Microsoft does for Windows 10 Home Edition. D

A pile of unnecessary complexity? cough Javascript ecosystem cough Seriously, though, I don't think you can avoid a lot of complexity if you build a product such as VS.
