On a 1080p display, there are ~2M pixels; this is a totally tractable number of triangles to do at 60fps even on cards that are like 10 years old. If I remember correctly, a buddy of mine was recently doing 6 million triangles in realtime

Wow, those links are a goldmine, thanks! I went down the tonemapping rabbit hole for a hobby game engine project a while ago and was surprised at how complex the state-of-the-art is.

It's funny that I forgot people actually use VSCode .. I think of it as a bad joke. Fair point though.

Theoretically, the client/server don't have to be on the same machine, but in practice they mostly are. As for the interface.. any language that can't speak the C ABI isn't a real language (read: they all can).. but this

My point is "why do we tolerate network requests in LSPs, but not compiler frontends"? If you think about it, the LSP is a way of doing libraries, which is dramatically worse than just inventing a binary interface and doing actua

So, you're saying it's outside the scope of an LSP to return information about a dependent type because it's .. not a concrete type? That sounds wrong. I can make literally any language support dependent types that have stru

What's the fundamental difference between a syntax highlighter and the frontend of a compiler? I would argue not much, apart from the fact that people are willing to have their syntax highlighter randomly explode, but are much more co

I've been working on a 3D voxel-based game engine for like 10 years in my spare time. At this point it's getting pretty close to being shadertoy for voxels. https://github.com/scallyw4g/bonsai I recently por

The base primitive a GPU draws is triangles; they are the fastest primitive for math-y reasons, but the basic premise is that you can subdivide any triangle into two right-angle triangles, which have favorable properties for scanline-based

First off, yay for making games! I love working on games, and have spent many, many hours doing it, so welcome to the club :) Second, let me introduce you to my good friend, the profiler. A profiler is an absolutely indispensable tool for

    > Well. That’s a bit misleading. Uhh .. wut? The game appears to be similar to a point-and-click adventure game, which were popular in the 80s, and ran just fine. In 1988, a CRAY Y-MP supercomputer had "64 megawords of memory".

Somebody's probably already pointed this out, but in the case of motors, making them lighter can make a big difference. For example, by making the flywheel in a clutch lighter, you reduce the amount of torque it takes to spin the flywh
