Of the three, I only like cars. I'm from Canada, and I like cars for many of the same reasons I like programming. They're complicated, fickle, and go fucking fast when you get everything right. It's like mainlining adrenali

This sounds very wrong to me. Take the C4 training dataset for example. The uncompressed, uncleaned, size of the dataset is ~6TB, and contains an exhaustive English language scrape of the public internet from 2019. The cleaned (still unco

With the general lack of scientific rigour, accountability, and totally borked incentive structure in academia, I'm really not sure if I'd trust whitepapers any more than I'd trust YouTube videos at this point.

My issue with exceptions is also practical. If they didn't introduce significant stability issues, I'd have no problem. As it stands, it's impossible to write robust software that makes use of C++ exceptions. > the compi

If you're planning on shutting down, what's the fundamental difference between throwing an exception, vs simply complaining loudly and calling exit() ..?

It's remarkable to me how many codebases ban exceptions and yet, somehow, people still insist they're good.

You're inferring that time invested per project is directly proportional to love for the craft, which I disagree with strongly. Taking a weekend to explore a new medium is an act of interest/love in the craft. Is Robert Bateman

Another commentor succinctly pointed out one argument against RAII+friends is that it encourages thinking about single objects, as opposed to bulk processing. In many contexts, the common case is in fact bulk processing, and programming t

Many soft-realtime systems make use of these techniques, specifically 3D graphics and game engines.

Agreed. I guess I'm interested in anyone that's specifically written about ownership strategies that lean into the group allocation thing.

In reverse order they were asked .. The best argument I've ever come across against using RAII is that you end up with these nests of objects pointing to one another, and if something fails, the cleanup code can really only do one thin

Does anyone reading this have links to people who have written specifically about a C++ ownership model that rejects the smart_ptr/RAII/friends model in favor of an ownership model that embraces bulk allocations, arenas, freelists
