Looks like it works now, although the diagram it generated is pretty watery. It mis-judged that the "work queue system" is kind of off by itself, when in fact almost all of the important work in the engine goes through the work qu

Tried https://github.com/scallyw4g/bonsai and I believe it hung after the green loading bar completed. Left it for several minutes

I've had a similar experience several times over the years. Even at companies with no working product that ostensibly wanted to 'move fast and break things'. And I do the same thing; quit and move on. I'm pretty convi

I absolutely love that this idea stemmed from the HMH episode guide. Great resource, and a seemingly great idea. Looking forward to seeing where this goes!

It was for kind of a weird project .. a new shell called Oil. It was originally written in python, which turned out to be too slow (obviously), so the author decided to transpile python -> c++ and compile that with a custom python runti

Yeah I remember reading that post about bugs over time. IIRC 5 years was the time it takes for most bugs to get ferreted out.

I implemented a copying collector a while ago while working on a python runtime and this is the article I wish I had then. Great read

Are there actually fake loading bars these days? I thought software was mostly just slow and shitty ..

Strong agree here. I tend to try as hard as I can to write as much as I can in house so that when shit hits the fan, I have a great chance of being able to do something about it. Shelling out to an AST parsing library that happens to be sl

Some good points, thanks for the insight :) Yeah, when I multithread something I pretty much assume that I can hog the whole machine for the time slice the job is going to be running. Said another way, I assume there will be a small number

EDIT: I forgot to mention that for tight performance, avoid branches. This means ifs, switchs, loops, goto, etc. Sometimes you need branches, but mispredicted branches can be extremely costly, causing pipeline stalls and flushes. This is

I do low level systems programming, so pretty different from JS-land, but I feel the techniques you should apply when doing optimization generally apply at any level/language. 0) algorithmic improvement. Obvious shit like do a quick s

Fantastic read. I did OIT a while back in my engine that does basically this, but with a much simpler transmittance function. Very cute idea to use wavelets to encode the transmittance.
