I gave up on Talk / Hangouts a few years ago, when I kept getting into a state with it where someone would send me messages fine but my replies would be delayed for several hours . It was possibly the most frustrating computer-mediate

since browsers originally only displayed documents, some of the assumptions are nicer than the assumptions that came out of desktop metaphors. For example, most UI text in a browser can be copy/pasted, and that's almost never true

I see this as an important stage of going green: Recently/Currently: Unpredictable spikes in wind+solar power make it less profitable to run base-load power plants, since they can no longer guarantee profit at 100% of their duty cycle.

it depends on what you mean by "invalid transactions". If you mine a block that doesn't follow the rules, the rest of the network will just ignore it, and so you've wasted your computation.

SQLalchemy is kind of a pain in the ass to actually use, though. The DSL doesn't feel very Pythonic, it's weird and confusing. The way it traverses the Object graph when loading associations between models is magical and opaque an

I can't quite explain it, but this change has given me conscious access to a feeling about Twitter-the-product that I only had at a subconscious level before now: complete, overwhelming, extraordinary rage.

people in SV aren’t “suceeding” - they’re making twice as much money as everyone else in exchange for creating systems of surveillance. I’m not surprised people are salty about it.

Yeah, but that's work that people have to remember to keep doing, and if they fall behind, the pain gets worse and worse when they do finally have to merge. Some teams seem to do fine with this, but I've seen it go pretty badly, t

My belief is that it's long-lived branches that are the problem, since trying to keep diverging code-bases in synch is a huge source of pain. Switching to branchless development is probably an overreaction, though.
