800 columns in an OLTP is insane, that was my reaction when I read the OP. But in analytics it's not so unusual, although at that point a SQL DB is probably not the right solution anyway, and the data scientists probably do need all t

While SELECT * has no place in a production code, it's the right thing to do during data exploration with ad hoc queries. Only after I get sufficient understanding of the data, I'll restrict the columns. I often see junior deve

I'd pay money to be a passenger on the maiden voyage. They should definitely include a few passenger cabins, as many freighters have. I have never been on a cruise - has zero appeal to me, but this would be awesome. I'd like to s

What is absolutely mind blowing to me is that when I was in college, in my crystallography class, we were inferring the crystal structure through the X-ray diffraction. Now we can observe it directly. I took the crystallography class in l

It would be interesting how much power you could generate by having a little outboard propeller driving a small generator. It would decrease the speed of your yacht, but if you're not on a schedule to get anywhere who cares, right? An

This sets a terrible precedent. If you believe in democracy, you should let the public choose what they want or don't want to hear. Now we have Jack Dorsey controlling the public discourse. If you don't trust the public, you rea

I have been in Taiwan multiple times on business, but all trips came in two distinct time periods: about 1998 and then 2008. Each time I have spent several weeks there - not a two day trip like airport-hotel-client-hotel-airport. I had a
