We use XFS for sparql.uniprot.org (basically columnar database with semantic graph) there we recently retested it by accident. We use 2*4 TB consumer SSD ,ok rich consumer ;) With XFS we have 10-13% faster linear write of one big file (1.3T

I think Graal and Truffle are really great technologies. With a lot of potential to overcome unneeded silo's between programming language communities. For example the project I work on has a website that has been continuously improved

You are (like us) most likely too small. Unless you are buying 1,000 machines at a time you don't get there :( Waiting one more quarter for AMD servers to arrive from the major vendors is a good idea. But if your spend is in the milli

I use both Uber and TaxiPhone app in Geneva Switzerland. The taxi phone app is better because it is more honest, no fake cars in the TaxiPhone app driving "in the middle of lake geneva (along the pedestrian ferry routes)" while th

Another option is to compare a minimally optimizing compiler with a more optimizing compiler. This one can do in Java land with client/server flags. Client takes for our workload 15% more time to run than server. Now what is that 15% w

Just as a data point I wanted to see what the benefit of JVM HotSpot is over JVM just interpreting. Code that normally runs in 22 minutes with HotSpot is still running 99minutes later in interpreter only mode! I am starting to think that th

I love SPARQL, although I often say it causes problems for developers but solves problems for organizations. I know I am not in the average developer sphere, but working as a data provider to the wider public (ok scientific public) SPARQL i

Difference with the linux kernel one is that this one is rather uncomplete. There are a lot of biological pathways that are just unknown.

The bug is from 1997, so not up to date with the latest versions of knuth. There are nice new string hash functions like murmur, cutyhash and xxhash that I believe are not covered in the art of computer programming.

I agree with this, reading it I feel once again the limitations of written communication forms. However, the top level discussion is about is it worth using an optimizing compiler. Or in my example is it worth using TruffleRuby instead of M

If you look at modern JIT compilers such as Truffle-Ruby, then yes it will change algorithms. e.g. changing sort algorithms depending on data size. if the data is small enough it will do a bubblesort on registers, when its big it will do Ti

I am always impressed by the IGV of graal/truffle to see how code is compiled. Really looking forward to JVM-9/JVMCI general availability so it becomes easier to play with truffle.

Talking about it is great, but you must document it all. You must get the letter, as it is a rather significant amendment to the employment contract. All kinds of bad stuff can happen when you don't document this well. Employee and emp

According to a poster I saw once posted in front of my house, the average IT salary is 8700 CHF a month. But expect more depending on the region and for programmers.

Completely agree, as nuclear won't ramp up in the next decade. i.e. if I have 10 billion USD in the bank I can have that all converted in solar panels or wind turbines in 2 years. A nuclear plant would take 10 years just to get build.
