You should try again, depending on the software (i.e. which SPARQL database) it can be much faster than neo4j.

GMO often changes one thing at a time (i.e. modifies one gene). While the classical approach of breeding plants for desired traits modifies 100s if not 1000s of genes at the same time. GMO is simpler to understand and test for that reason a

Verbose and explicit is what made java checked exceptions the sign of the demon for some programmers. The err pattern in GO might end up the same. In the end I think the problem is that there are two separate classes of programs. The first

You should have a lookat rdf and json-ld. More and more bio databases are supporting these serialisations of their data. Quite a few even allow sparql access (sql over http for semantic graphs) e.g. rd.ebi.ac.uk and beta.sparql.uniprot.org

For the vast majority of code there is a branch anyway because the comparison result is used in an conditional statement. This means a good inlining compiler probably generates one branch for the comparison plus conditional. i.e. this is wh

This is one of the reasons that Value types as being discussed for java9 would be such a big benefit for easy performance. You can do it today but it requires more work, that we often don't do. Parts of the talk are slightly outdated b

Probably, (also makes back compatibility to earlier jvms easier). However, I think the authors went for "horrible syntax in examples" so that we have time to think about a final good/decent syntax. See what happened with lamb

In java 8 you should probably use the Exact methods in java.lang.Math (In cases where the size is int or long and overflow errors need to be detected, the methods addExact, subtractExact, multiplyExact, and toIntExact throw an ArithmeticExc

That is another part I missed, the ASM implementation seemed to optimise the function while potentially deoptimising the whole program. For most code overflows are rare, jumping to deal with the rare cases but otherwise just doing the norma

Sure I hace quite a few programs that run in 64mb of ram (default) jvms. Probably could go lower for those but I never even looked at improving those. Java programs can use very little ram if appropriately designed for a problem. I.e. don&#

The JVM has at least a security model/system. Something the Ruby MRI VM lacks. i.e. a ruby program is never in a sandbox. Using the JVM with JRuby or Ruby MRI as webserver are reasonably equivalent in security footprint. And in recent

Seems much more sensible as a quicker commercialization approach. Java code does not depend on hardware memory models but a defined memory model. Much easier to validate your jvm is valid than all C programs that clients might want to run.

JSON-LD is just fantastic at bringing all the data in RDF to power real world JS/websites. Angular.js and JSON-LD plus SPARQL results in JSON is just so much fun to play with.

Totally agree, I never wanted to get involved in C++ hotspot. But graal development (even to the point of generating assembly) looks much more welcoming.

This is one of the things that makes java 8 really exiting. I think it is going to show where JIT languages are going to shine in comparison to AOT compiled ones. Multi architecture code in one program without the developer needing to jump

Very nice read! How does this work compare to work on java 8 to bring GPU compute to the jvm by AMD, ARM and Oracle? Do you see this as a competition or do you feel you are in a separate niche?

I use SPARQL a lot although not Fuseki. I really like the flexibility it gives in the schema (flexible not less schema). As well as that one query language can be used on radically different implementations i.e. I don't need to change

Oh, you could make this run using MPI etc... no problem. But then all you are really doing is going from high density to low density ram. And that is just not as large a saving as you would think it is. Because you are expanding rapidly the
