Semantics on the word "startup": In my view to qualify as a startup the idea or business process must be novel in some way. Otherwise it is simply "self-started" as you mentioned.

It's the author's own fault. He/she starts off with "(think Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.)", then proceeds directly to show the survey reflects a variety of industries. There are vastly different considerations for real world business v

reedlaw - I think you're too caught up with ideology. I'm now more libertarian than I've ever been, but I temper that wonderful ideology with real world considerations. Historical events in the U.S. have caused such imbalances that simply m

I have one for you. It's something I thought of long ago and have an interest in but no immediate plans to work on. Develop a program that can answer based on plain English. The obvious value would be to apply it to search engines (huge mon

I think market research companies use existing sales data to estimate current market size; figures can then be confirmed with light checking. The market size estimate can be helpful to provide a reference on which to base rough figures (whi

This is a great question. I'm fairly new to this site, but as I read and explore around I'm finding myself in agreement with Paul Graham. In the How to Apply section for funding he explains a key thing he looks at is the founders, because i

As others have mentioned 3 years is a long time, especially in web technology. You say you can't commit full-time for 3 years, but what happens if you launch the 4-6 month one and it takes off (but is not profitable) and demands your time?

I think that statement is incomplete. It should be 'do what you love [that users will love too] and the money will come'. Also, I think it might help to try and find partners that are strong in areas you are weak, for example, someone great

I think the source of the author's confusion is the mixed bag that comes along with desperation. On one hand desperation can incentivise you to act and spur you to try things you probably wouldn't have, but which may turn out brilliantly. O

Also, a tautology is a statement that is necessarily true. However, 3% doesn't necessarily mean a diminished value. For example, if your local bank had a promotion which guaranteed a 3% daily interest savings return that would be considered

My response to that, and I got this from some movie I can't remember, is that I prefer to think I create my own luck. Let's hypothesize that opportune situations arise for all people at various times. All things being equal, only a select f

Yes, I agree that fearlessness and inspiration sound like ridiculously simple qualities to have. My point was that people are made up of various strengths and weaknesses, and it's rare for anyone to have the requisite full toolbox for self-

I think it makes sense when viewed another way. Only a select few, about 3% of this country are wealthy, even though one can create their own wealth here. I think the reason is two-fold. First, it's remarkably rare for a person to actually
