Categorizing Heinlein and Clarke as "modern" is a bit unfair to the current crop of SciFi authors, In my view. Authors like Iain M. Banks, Stephen Baxter and Peter F. Hamilton (all Brits, coincidentally) go way beyond anything Hei

Good catch! I suspect it is more like they wanted to convey the message Windows 10 can also be used in embedded applications currently covered by e.g. Windows Embedded Compact 7. Someone in marketing did an image search for "embedded b

It is the blind spot of the Web/Silicon Valley/Startup world that not all programming is web programming. While the Googles and Facebooks of this world get all the press, there is a stupendous number of developers working on good

AFAIK, it was already established they do not have enough fuel to circularize the orbit at the correct altitude, let alone correct the inclination (which takes large amounts of fuel).

It should be noted that "cannot be eradicated" is something different than "cannot be cured". I've read other articles that seem to point in the direction that cancer is simply an intrinsic side-effect of the way ou

With the masses of the comet and the spacecraft being relatively close, it's hard to tell whether Rosetta is co-orbiting the sun or orbiting the comet itself.

"My hunches have gotten better" is perhaps the best description of the value of experience. I am 38 myself, and sometimes, when I am surrounded by a new batch of fresh 20-somethings, I feel a little like the author of the original

That, exactly. And I simply cannot fathom how the response to a flash-bang grenade in a cot with a child in it can ever be "well, obviously there was no way for us to know there were children, so don't blame us" instead of &q

It may be partly "somebody else will fix this", but also largely "is this really what it seems"? It could be a genuine robbery, or a piece of improv street theatre, or a sociology experiment. And since nobody else is res

A slight elaboration about the way your eye works: The cones are not on-off affairs, and they are not limited to specific wavelengths. Each type of cone has a response curve, and these curves overlap (see e.g. the Wikipedia article about Co

Yes, but higher buildings require a larger footprint. You cannot build a spire the height of the Burj Khalifa (828 m or 2,717 ft) with a floorplan that offers natural light everywhere all the way from the bottom to the top floors.

A bit of a tangent, but this is the reason why there are no real high-rise buildings in Europe (The tallest building in the EU is only 1004 ft high). There are laws that determine the minimum amount of natural light an office should have. S
