Librelist has no user interface to speak of - at least with Google Groups it was possible for some users to post from the web. A critical reason for our move was being able to make it easier for people to ask questions and get answers - thu

I agree - it's really a great tool for questions and there already exists a vibrant jQuery community there. Unfortunately Q&A isn't the only form of communication that the jQuery community has: We also have bug reports and development d

For the jQuery Google Groups we didn't see much improvement. There was a slight reduction I the amount of spam but we're still getting spoofed, which really hurts. I can't wait to be off groups and on to the new forum fulltime.

Thankfully most of the complaints are already resolved or are in the process of being resolved. A BIG reason why we ended up choosing Zoho discussions was their willingness to work with the team and accomodate our concerns. They even did al

That wasn't enough for us. Most of the moderators/administrators are being spoofed and having spam sent as them. http://ejohn.org/blog/google-groups-is-dead/

Actually, we did reduce the complexity to a constant: Went from n^2 to just n: http://ejohn.org/blog/function-call-profiling/ The 4x number was wall-clock time for the particular tests - so obviously your mileage may vary. In fact, the mo

Actually it's not really efficient for us to do that - since we would need to expose literally everything and in the end we would end up with the same result as running it through the simple minifier. As it turns out though the simple minif

Yeah, we only use simple mode - it's advanced mode that everyone needs to watch out for - it doesn't do what you expect (it's optimized for combining multiple files, not producing one file).

Sorry, I was using "desktop" to mean web-based development in browsers that are typically running on PCs, Macs, laptops, etc. It might be nice to do some additional testing against some of the desktop app environments (Titanium, Air, etc.)

That's the plan! Right now we're in the process of collecting phones from mobile manufacturers for testing. We want to, first, add these devices into our development and testing workflow so that we can support them fully. Once we've done th

We're checking out the Closure Compiler - it looks like with the simple compile options on it takes it back down to about 64KB minified, 21.6KB gzipped (a very modest increase over the last release, about 2-3KB). (Un)fortunately we've been

Interesting to see this get linked to - this was a little hack that I did back in 2006 and haven't touched it since. In short it was an experiment to develop an alternative syntax to jQuery (I've always felt that jQuery's syntax and idioms

I definitely plan on switching jQuery over to using this compressor - excited by the output. However it appears as if it crashes when you push the latest nightlies of jQuery in. Not sure what's up with that.

This is a great rule. I follow it in all my talks and in all my blog posts, as well. Meta talk is, frankly, rather boring and distracts from the primary focus of the talk/post. I find that when you intentionally attempt to steer away from b

You should chat with the moderators of those groups - I'm positive that they're having a similar experience. For people that have already been whitelisted in (and assuming that you don't get spoofed) the experience is great. For those runni

Not really a problem with email. It's more a series of critical errors on the part of the Google Groups system. If they were to implement Gmail-quality spam filtering then most of my concerns would be moot (since I never would have had to t

Not really - until there's a good Keynote -> JavaScript converter we've got to play the hand that we've been dealt. I actually built one a while back that converted a PDF into a series of images then gave them a simple slideshow: http:

Nope. In all honesty, it was one of the worst-targeted talks that I've ever given. I had given a similar talk at OSCON (highly technical crowd, audience) and was asked to give it again at Web 2.0 Expo. If you're not familiar with that confe

That's fine because I don't particularly want commercial projects running on TestSwarm.com. I'm keeping it exclusive to large, trusted, open source projects. Honestly, if commercial projects wish to get help from general users who donate ma
