Mask advocates claim that stopping large droplets from _exiting_ your mask (not incoming) will reduce viral load. And if infected, viral load is inversely proportional to the severity of illness, infectiousness, etc. The marketing campaig

Can you say more about Go and homogeneous workloads? You might be referring to mixed IO- & CPU-bound tasks, and Go's former inability to preemptively schedule tightly written loops? (Solved along the way: https://githu

I built a whitelisting phone system for my aging dad with Twilio, an OBi200 VoIP adapter, and gcloud for transcribing untrusted calls sent to voicemail. (US specific) If you think the aggressive IRS and Sheriff scams are bad -- you've

Looks like this changed for series 5 keys. In August 2019: "the YubiKey now also supports ... Curve25519, the default curve used in ssh (EdDSA and Diffie-Hellman)", "Addition of Ed25519 signature support, a modern ECC curve&q

You're looking for "time lock encryption". Gwern [1] is a reasonable place to start. Or re Bitcoin [2]. But as these state, the risk is your specific implementation tech breaks in the intervening decades. [1] https:/

> It's not just incentives, bureaucracies and inefficiencies that caused cost increases. This might be true if there weren't stark counterexamples, e.g. Singapore at 1/4 the cost, with better outcomes. Notably there, gove

The best way to assess your reaction to meals with sugar is an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) _with insulin_ (most doctors don't do the latter), and see which Kraft curve you exhibit. The second best way is using a continuous gluco

(Weeping in agreement.) The lesson I took away from hosting operations is that the implementation of internet standards has a long tail of customization; it's part of the job to accommodate them graciously. :)

Why would real accuracy be difficult to determine? Clinicians get to test these on their patient populations and validate against other high accuracy methods (point-in-time serum draws). For instance, Dr. Peter Attia says he gets a useful

Alas, the Dexcom is more accurate and has better calibration, but the Libre if far better covered by insurance options. Self-hackers have to pony up.

The contrarian take on Bitcoin and carbon is that Bitcoin chases the cheapest energy, and solar is quickly becoming the cheapest source. In some areas of the world it already is (various subsidized infra in China). See Ramez Naam (co-chair

That's interesting. I read him (in total) as being quite optimistic about the way forward, if intertia and self-interest can be overcome. He's listed as an author in a number of nutritional and other studies. One might see those

Note, all of these studies use a low standard of evidence (food questionnaires and the like), and they generate low signal (barely registering positive/negative). Read John Ioannidis @ Stanford for why these methods should banned, and

It's better to think of the long-term cycle. Ruminants in regenerative management, for instance, increase the richness of the soil over time. Whereas it's very hard to do that with crops.

I appreciate the skepticism. But you might want to look at the foundational evidence for meat-causes-(bad thing) health claims. It's all incredibly weak and confounded, and would never be considered evidence in other fields.

I feel like HN should implement a "positive-only" or "constructive-only" flag for posts, whether set by posters or moderators. Perhaps all Show HN. Start to experiment, see what sticks.
