Blindsight by Peter Watts. It has some silliness but the principal idea was brilliant and has really stayed with me: the idea that self awareness might be an aberration and alien life could be intelligent without it. In particular, the idea

I don't mind how the view part of react works, but I don't like how it gets so complicated managing state. With a lot of state libraries for it now just providing lots of hooks you end up with so much in the view. Like you'll

I know that the wording of the Budapest Memorandum didn't require a commitment but it could have been a basis for "you signed this and by breaking this agreement we have grounds for a defense". A defense pact could also have

I did not mean negotiation. Diplomatically can be showing force but not using it. Like publically saying if Russia invades then The US and UK will close and defend the airspace as their commitment to the Budapest agreement, while moving som

No, why would you assume that? I mean diplomatically like publically saying if Russia invades then The US and UK will close and defend the airspace as their commitment to the Budapest agreement, while moving some forces around the area. Rus

It's not just the money the US govt is spending in the US. The US and western military export industry is also getting a huge boost. Russia played a big part in exports before the war. The combination of needing to use their factories

I downloaded it to try. It's very slow. Slow to open, slow to open a project, slow to open files, slow to scroll files. Highlighting a small code file visible went down the file. The go to file command only showed files I'd alread

For the free communities I'm a part of, this is not a bad thing. Social conversations disappearing after 90d is a good thing, and I'm glad they're purging that data as well.

Apple have managed to get themselves into a monopolistic position. Actually it's a duopoly. It doesn't matter if there are alternatives to Android and iPhone, those are the majority of devices to something like 99%. If you want to

I really dislike savvy servers. In my regular trips to the US they leave me feeling quite unsettled. The best wait staff are the ones in Europe. They really hate you for being a customer. I respect that. The best system I've lived with

This has been common in NZ since at least 2007. It's not really justifiable. Wages aren't 100% of the costs, plus open cafes and restaurants make more on public holiday days. Seeing as it's busier on a public holiday I just a

Yah but you can just buy that. You don't need to waste your time sucking up to the sales rep, and if you did you could go get another, just as powerful a system from someone else.

I don't really get it. I thought oh yeah I guess I buy expensive for my income so why not. But if I want a bag I research to try and find the best one for me, not for prestige. Same with every item. I guess people buy fancy watches and

I'm excited for Linux on these type of devices but a previous story today reported them as bootlocked. So we can't just take any old one and install Linux, it would have to be specific models.

Locked bootloader. Locked into windows until they no longer support the device and then it's garbage.

I'll reiterate that I don't believe it to be the case that animals with smaller brains are not self-aware, but wanted to counter that it HAS to be a smooth gradient of level of consciousness between simpler and more complex brains

by jemmyw 2y ago
Not that I believe this, but there could be an intelligence cliff where you get to a certain level and suddenly consciousness and self awareness appear. That is a mechanism where gradual change could lead to stepped differences.

that doesn't sound that bad as an swe. Work on some of those frustrations, do some refactoring, bug fixing and documenting. Maybe have some extra time for job hunting. At least you're being paid.

I did indeed get to ride on it, and I thought it was really good. It did take approximately twice as long as an Uber due to avoiding the highways. I'm ok with that, it was nice to be in a car that didn't tailgate.
