Which CS program? I think you’re more than exaggerating. They don’t teach topology, FEM and abstract algebra in “most” CS program. These are just three random examples; most of the book is wayyy more advanced than what I would expect to lea

I did a dual major in math and computer science, I recommend it if you are aiming for a research career like me. It helped me considerably in AI and mobile robotics, and I think in some ways it put me ahead of people who "only" di

Nobody? I see AirPods everywhere. I’m not aware of the actual sales numbers but I’m sure that they’re among the best selling >100$ headphones. I think that you are underestimating the popularity and appeal of wireless headphones. I like

Some great advice! Is there something like this more specific to computer science theses?

I’m wondering the same thing. With the size of this lab, maybe this will drive the adoption of open alternatives to CUDA. Serious amount of software will be written for this supercomputer. In Canada, however, all public GPU clusters use nvi

Doesn’t that introduce serious overhead compared to first class native arrays as in Julia or FORTRAN?

Most scientific use cases need CUDA, not just DL ;) Also it is arguable that nvidia high-end GPUs is the best in terms of gaming performance.

Even if that was true, the « mind » of most robots consist of mamy algorithms, some of which are not based on machine learning i.e. SLAM and path planning.

Not really, the robot uses it in the sense that the machine learning algorithm will detect cabbages and tell if it's ready, and that information will be used by the robot to perform harvesting. Of course, you can have end-to-end contro

I had no idea LSD was difficult to test for; I guess I had some preconceived belief that most regular drugs (including LSD which is not rare) could easily be detected after a few hours of ingestion. It actually surprises me that you can be

Performing nearest neighbors search is much more expensive than a simple multiply-add. I don’t know about the other, my idea is that a perceptron is much easier to implement in hardware/low-level operations.

I am extremely skeptical about your open flame idea, especially from a security standpoint and temperature control/maintenance. Also, if as another poster says 70% of the energy goes to heating then why replace this with a very dirty e

I'm surprised that automatically translated Java code would be easier to maintain than human-written COBOL. Doesn't it become difficult to understand? I suppose 50 years old COBOL is basically as cryptic as auto-generated Java...

I used one of their camera this year. Cool API for classical 2D vision, there was an onboard intel computer to perform processing on the camera itself. Did not turn out to be well suited for what I wanted sadly.
