Squeak ( http://www.squeak.org/ ) is fun. It's designed for teaching, has lots of high level libraries available and it's simple (everything is in one system). This isn't going to do much to help with Unix/Linux mind, but as someone else p

On the contrary, spreadsheets are a cool model of computation. They're live - you can update the value of any variable (cell) and all the other references update automatically. It's a dataflow model. See, for example, the Cells project at

How does a programming language teach at all? Well, it doesn't alone however the concepts that are available in a programming language constrain your thought process. Java/Pascal is much more constraining than something like Oz/Scheme.

It's kind of depressing that he felt the need to rebrand just because it wasn't commanding respect. Getting a good demonstration (rather than fibonacci!) would go a long way to getting Subtext noticed!

Don't you just plug in the audio and a big speaker system? You could choose the engine to imitate and make any noise you want. (sure I've read that in an article somewhere, though can't find the link!)
