The interrupting parenthetical was so disruptive to the sentence that I thought it said, essentially, "The trombone is the only brass instrument. Parenthetical. The trombone is played by moving the slide."

The role of the tongue is heavily emphasized in modern brass pedagogy. Try Claude Gordon, Physical Approach to Elementary Brass Playing, 1977

"The trombone is the only brass instrument in a classical orchestra" is a statement that requires further support.

I'm just wondering why this Wild West stuff seems to be neither effective, since Texas has auto theft rates well above national averages, nor necessary, considering that Florida lacks the statute and has auto theft rates well below nat

What's your hypothesis on why Texas has a much higher auto theft rate than Tennessee, given that they long had the policy you seem to believe is a remedy?

Instagram auth flow is still hosed as I write this. If I try to sign on via web to my account, which was "recovered" yesterday at least 8 times by me and by hackers, I get the most obnoxious recaptcha treatment I've ever see

Yeah. I spent years working partly for the account abuse team at Google and that is why I always shake my head (silently, because the HN groupthink disagrees) at the endless parade of stories on this site about people who lost access to the

My account, with a 3-letter username worth $$$, got hacked yesterday morning probably by this flow, but I did manage to defend it. I think by far the biggest problem with Instagram/FB/Meta auth flow is that 2FA does nothing. You d

It is an incorrect use of what was already a flawed metaphor. Pressure is isotropic. Directed pressure makes no sense, like all other fluid analogies in unrelated fields of engineering.

This is, if crude, the correct take. You always choose your applications first, then the operating system best suited for them, then the hardware platform.

I'd guess the problem with the display is software, not hardware, and it just goes to show that the model of slapping parts together and using random downloadable software doesn't always turn out right.

Internally the statement is perfectly true: some researchers did estimate this, and the credit card is a fair proxy for a 5g mass. Was the research flagrantly incorrect? Yes. But that does not affect the truth of the statement.
