I just removed all those feeds from my subscription list and only follow the ones who put the whole article in their feed. Works very well for me.

I did the 10 days too and even though it was a great exercise it didn't really change anything in my life. I assume it is because I have always been a calm person.

I have mentioned this last time but http://jabs.nu/feedthemonkey is my TTRSS client written in Qt, doesn't do much though, only displaying unread articles in a window you can read and mark as read.

Hehe, I'm quite sure most of the readers of HN are able to selfhost ;)

I couldn't find TinyTinyRSS in it which is a open source alternative with a JSON API. http://tt-rss.org/redmine/projects/tt-rss/wiki

I wasn't able to get Liferea to work with TTRSS, and I really tried :-/. Therefor I wrote one myself but it has only the possibility to show posts, no list or anything because I never used that http://jabs.nu/feedt

Yeah I hoped someone would come up with such a protocol, I myself been writing about that last year already, but sadly 3rd party service it seems to become.

I would like just a protocol for which I or basically anyone could implement a server and a client, kind of like SMTP and IMAP for email (but as a REST service or something easier)

Here is someone who started thinking about a protocol for RSS sync: https://github.com/ArturoVM/pond/wiki/API-Documentation

A Google Reader replacement for me is some sync-server with which I can sync read/unread between a native feed reader on my iPhone, my ThinkPad, my Android tablet and my iMac.

It reminds me of "Michel and Webb - Dr. Death" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skl71urqKu0 "The Giant Death Ray was meant to help mankind not to destroy it!"

My experience was something in between Microsoft and Mozilla, we never just hacked to get things done, but we neither were allowed to contribute back to the OS community.

That is a odd argument, you could also ask: Who would die if we didn't use electricity? or Who would die if we didn't use toilet paper?

It is just not true that there is some other forum or IRC or mailing list for the topics one wants to discuss. One example is local politics, Facebook is the only platform where you can find people willing to discuss topics like that, there

It is just that I never really used reddit, don't really know why.

Social seems broken in almost all services. Can it be fixed?

I don't quite understand from those links how Microsoft does that, what is Secure Boot, what are Linux shops and what does Microsoft do to kill them?

I still think in the long run Tent is the superior approach. App.net will do what every company does, and it doesn't matter how unevil they seem. Open protocols like SMTP, HTTP, XMPP and Tent are the way to go in the future.

I feel I'm not that familiar with the matter so I would be able to make a real case.

We need an open letter to mozilla in which we support their decision to block all third party cookies.

It is so weird to read stuff like: "When these apps get acquired [like Instagram did by Facebook], users don’t get to choose how to access their data" but no mention about what happens if app.net gets acquired like Instagram did by Facebook
