I wholeheartedly agree. I found it both interesting, and "actionable". It's helped me in very tangible way, particularly in stressful situations where I might have otherwise lost my cool.

IIRC, the YouTube annotations system stems out of Google's acquisition of Omnisio, a YC W08 graduate. (They went from starting YC to a $15million acquisition in ~6 months.)

Wow. That's a lot of hate toward App Engine! I've successfully used (and am using) App Engine for a few projects. For prototypers and small-scale users like me, it's been a God-send. I'm not a developer with 15+ years

When I was in the Navy, I knew a guy who had moved half-way around the world between postings. Virtually all of his "household goods" were in a container... that was lost overboard in a storm. It had happened to him years before

But CPC erosion is more likely due to higher % of searches from mobile devices. As Google's ads team works furiously to improve mobile ads, this will likely only go up. (Except that right now growth in the sheer number of mobile ads

Dropbox, AirBnB, and Stripe are the companies that have publicly achieved valuations of >$1Billion; those three alone likely drive 80%+ of the numbers.

There's definitely dilution. YC gets common (aka founders) shares for their initial 5-7%, so they get diluted just like founders do.

Anyone who has a particularly strong opinion (coupled with strong evidence) is likely full of crap, since it just recently rolled out across the company. By the end of the year it'll be more clear what the long-term effects are.

The 1.0 to 5.0 system doesn't exist any more. What is in the OP's blog post is how it's done as of 2014. (Very recent Xoogler here).
