That is very cool. I had a similar boot disk w/ DOS 3.x and TurboPascal. It made any PC I could walk up to a complete developer box. Just to be clear, when you say "without the need for the GUI", more accurately that's &

Despite it being everyone's favorite shame language, COBOL's DATA DIVISION makes it uniquely well-suited for long-term stability. Common practice is to avoid binary fields. This means what you see in your program is what you see o

My experience w/ WSL2 and Docker Desktop has been roughly equivalent: both a little fussy, but work just fine. What was it about either one that led you to such a strong preference?

If BasicAppleGuy is taking requests, I'd love (OK, hate) to see the progression of the XCode hammer icon. It tells a story unto itself. Once a legit carpenter's hammer, now something out of a Fisher-Price toy box. Likewise, simila

I'm surprised he didn't call out Picasso paintings as inspiration for the icon. You can look at the Finder smiley either as a face or as 90º profile, at least the right side. Given that dynamic, the new icon does look quite bad as

Interesting. My experience w/ HP-UX was in the 90s, but this (Integrity Virtual Machines) was released in 2005. I might call out FreeBSD Jails (2000) or Solaris Zones (2005) as an earlier and a more significant case respectively. I app

Not sure if I'd call out Jekyll as a paragon of stability. The last time I touched it, I made sure to write up detailed notes. In fairness, it's the only time I interact w/ Ruby. https://jeberle.github.io/jeky

CPU instruction sets do account for signed vs unsigned integers. SHR vs SAR for example. It's part of the ISAs. I'm calling this out as AFAIK, the JVM has no support for unsigned ints and so that in turn makes WASM a little more c

Thx for this perspective and info. Regarding "signedness and floating point that closer matches hardware", I'm not seeing unsigned integers. Are they supported? I see only: > Two’s complement signed integers in 32 bits and

I'm happy to see Odin chose snake_case instead of camelCase. At one time Zig debated switching to snake case, but that ship has sailed [0], sadly. It seems like a small bike-shed level comment, but when I consider the code I have left

It had better boot fast. CP/M makes you reboot every time you swap a disk. Note, you could make the same case for an IBM PC with two 5.25" drives (DOS).
