Indeed. There's countless movies that could be made around other aspects of this period in history. Personally I found this movie kind of a disappointment as Oppenheimer's story is one of the less emotionally engaging aspects to m

I also have a PhD in Algebraic Topology and feel similarly. One application I'd like to see explored more is the use of differentiable topological invariants as loss functions for training neural nets. Loss functions to measure topolog

I can definitely see those things being problems, but they are much more likely to occur when asking an LLM to generate code for you. That's not the best coding use case for LLMs IMO, it's much better to provide it code already wr

My experience has been that the hallucinations in GPT4 are actually pretty rare. But in any case, if I choose to use code it suggests I ask it for explanations and then I verify those myself by other means, e.g. tests. I think it's too

My point is that AI is just a tool for programming and that I see it as more comparable to the difference between walking and driving than the difference between driving stick and automatic.

But you do use a car, instead of walking everywhere.

I strongly disagree with this perspective. I have found GPT4 in particular to be very helpful in learning new programming languages and improving my overall coding. I still solve problems myself and I still read books, but GPT4 is the TA th

I'm not missing the point, I'm disagreeing with it. Sometimes ideas are insightful and this seems like one of those to me. It's OK that we disagree about that. It's too easy to just paint all ideas as trivial because the

I can see that maybe I was violently agreeing with the second part as I can't know why the parent comment was saying realizing the invention is hard. But I think my quibble with the first part stands. I'm not convinced that this i

That seems like an odd thing to takeaway from this. Envisioning the cellphone and it's social implications in 1919 is quite impressive. Making it a reality wasn't hard because it was missing the right person to build it, it was li

I don't disagree that Python environments are a mess. I'm actually a developer on quite a prominent large scale neural network training library and a DL researcher that uses said library. With my developer hat on I like to have mi

The point is that as awesome as this repo is it doesn't do much to ween the "ML folks" off of Python since it doesn't provide the flexibility and GPU support that people designing and training DL systems rely on.

The transition to consoles "just" being locked-down PCs makes me a little sad. From a software engineering perspective I really like the idea of squeezing out raw performance from custom bare metal architectures.

One thing university can do is help minimize procrastination. If you have financial and socially visible skin in the game you have a reason to show up and do the work as prescribed. I personally find it hard to stick with Coursera courses b
