I can speak for Berkeley, and you won't have any trouble with taking a class where you have to learn "syntax." I enjoyed the operating systems class there (project work in C++). I don't know if they are still using it, but the first CS cl

I feel the same way about Ruby and Javascript. I can't imagine what I was doing where I could have been using "eval" in C#. I was having to write my own interpreters inside the program and then pass around strings, which is crappy.

Wouldn't it be pretty easy to write an Arc (or even Arc') program to do this for you automatically? My first macro in Arc' would be "arcp" a macro which took Arc code and translated it to Arc' code. Then you just wrap every file in: (arcp

I just built a new computer. I make Windows programs for consulting and sale. I didn't want to buy another copy of XP (already have 2 for other computers) and Vista is a bloated mess that offers nothing to the end user (even if the kernel

Coming from the consulting angle, it is much easier to get work doing web related stuff, and that work pays better I am finding. Even the desktop stuff I am doing either has a web component, communicates with the web or a website in some w

I agree this is an issue with the C syntax. I always used to write my pointer declarations as: char* p instead of char p That way there was no clash with when you are dereferencing p - p Admittedly this approach may not help entirely wit

My reason is that my mom wants me to. I figure she did take care of me all those years, I might have to go back and get a degree once I'm well off.

His conclusions are off. First, for his evidence he is using a study from the Project for Excellence in Journalism. Do you think the study might be biased? The crowd mentality threatens the entire profession of Journalism (I'm not sayin

Okay, so the 4 steps to "perfect" software break down to: 1. Big-Design-Up-Front 2. Have a testing department 3. Use Source Control and Bug Tracking 4. Fix all instances of systematic errors and fix the process by which those

I liked this part the best: "Some of my banking customers have infrastructures that are bigger than the public Internet in terms of the storage they consume, given all the data and equipment they have to support." Somehow, I doubt that anyo

This guy is basically saying that Ubuntu sucks because it does exactly what it is intended to do, namely help convert Windows users to Linux and to make the transition as easy as possible. While it may be true that more hardcore Linux user

I'm surprised that people disagreed with my C recommendation (although, note that I did say Python or Ruby if you want to get something done quickly). Learning C isn't really about learning C, it's about learning how the computer actually

I use //TODO: in my Visual Studio stuff. VS will find them for you automatically, I don't even have to grep for them. I also try to write code so small and simple that it approaches the complexity of "Hello World." That way, it's easy t

If you want to learn to program then C. That's right learn C. C is the language that the operating system you're using is written in, not to mention several of these other programming languages (the main implementation of Python or Ruby,

As I'm sure everyone will say, this heavily depends on what you are writing. If you are writing Windows Forms in C# using Visual Studio you could easily write 1,000 lines of code in an hour (because the IDE makes them for you). Similarly,

I like to use the name of the company in place of "I" or "We" because it reminds the customer who you are. Also, it's good for search engine positioning.
