Thinking too small - for a $100M raise to make sense, valuation has to be $1B or higher, and need a 10x total market for VCs to be interested. So $10B to $100B is the target, and they need very large goals to justify it. [Edit - I guessed

The Libraries feature is essentially a sandbox for symlinks. It's just that the UI misrepresents the proper mental model.

"I think every startup out there is going to take as much as they can for as long as they can" No, many startups take calculated risks that they can increase their valuation before needing to raise again, or get profitable before they need

Thiel isn't beholden to time cycles that the funds are. So I wouldn't read into it that Founder's wasn't interested. This might help: http://www.danshapiro.com/blog/2010/08/vc-insanity-economics...

I don't think it's fair to call richer services lockin. GAE has lockin, in my opinion, because basic services use GAE-specific APIs and common needs (like scheduled jobs) are accomplished in uncommon ways. If you're using auto-scaling or b

Honestly, we've been close to hiring 2 remote people in our short time. Both were because we knew how good the people were. Hiring with confidence is difficult, and canning a person shortly after you realize you made a hiring mistake is a

We're fairly invested in python at this point, but I think smart devs are professional learners. We have a great dev on staff, Emily, who came from Rails and has been immediately productive. We're definitely not "full stack python" - best

It's a risk, but it's one we recognize. We're in this to disrupt hierarchy and broadcast-as-politics. I think that peer re-broadcasting is basically incompatible with the spirit of the interaction. The medium is the message, and the mess

Devs use IRC, even in the office. And we do standups with some members on Skype. But meatspace still matters. We generally prefer people in the office, all other things being equal. All other things are generally not equal, but it's a co

I just looked at a rough count - it's 1.1B voter history records. I don't have an offline copy to do heavier analytics on it - just from analyze stats on indexes for now. Also, after signing up, people can correct/revise their voting recor

Hi, I'm a dev at Votizen. I haven't read that study yet - it's on my list - but I tend to agree that existing social ties are somewhat orthogonal to political views. We are surprised by our friends' views precisely because we don't feel co

The repercussions for misusing this data are pretty severe. This isn't a slap on the wrist, and we take securing that data seriously.

No, please don't call "logging.whatever" as needed. That uses the root logger, and that removes the consumer's ability to tune different loggers. logger = logging.getLogger("libname.foo") logger.<whatever> is much more useful and p

You should, definitely. If you have subsystems where different abstractions or granularities might be useful, declare a logger for each of those. Document them clearly. Make the top-level the name of your library. "libname.foo", "libname

From as early as I can remember until about 14, I was a dangerously deep sleeper. I only sleep-walked a couple times, but there were times when I had extended, apparently-waking conversations with people, then had no recollection of them.

The act of measuring would change the behavior. In this way, transparency activism suffers the same phenomenon as security: doing the job right yields an environment in which there is no apparent need for doing the job right.

I agree with what you're saying, but the solution is not to make the situation worse by having a PM screaming at them about TPS reports. That will only drive away what talent is in the pull of Widget Inc; a net negative for the company. Wi

The idea is that you coordinate concurrent read/write to the same structures, yielding a shared data view without formal coordination. Also, the structures may be large enough that you don't want them all in-memory for each client.

In general in the US, if a petition gets enough signatures, then a representative takes it up as a topic. But there is no guarantee that a petition will have its hearing. Are you saying that in AU there is a guarantee? How many signatures
