I experimented with just mov eax, 1 and found it be slower - though I didn't try inc eax. Using 16-bit registers is tricky because they leave the upper bits unchanged. Its easy to trigger a partial register hazard inadvertently. p.s.

This is the first time I've heard an argument for the crazy high cost of the US court system. Realistically though the BATNA is no lawsuit at all because the plaintiff can't afford it.

Assembly is still quite useful in a number of circumstances. The compiler was generating terrible code for a ticket (spin) lock, and rewriting in assembly helped considerably [1]. Its also still the best way to get the most out of AVX and

AWS overcharges on their hardware to an absurd degree. The main problem is access to their network. You could host on your own hardware, but you'll never be able to offer the same QOS as a server directly inside an AWS datacenter - a

A lot of the relevant low level optimizations are documented - like micro and macro op fusion. The published optimization guide is thousands of pages long.

I see my dogs punish each other for benign behavior - just things they disagree with. It certainly appears to be a form of moral policing within the pack.

Redis is a popular program, it makes sense to spend the time to port it. But what your missing is the long tail, thousands of little programs scattered around - or edge cases in bigger ones. Working on a non-x86 platform makes you a second

I beams are quite safe if the fire retardant remains on (a major cause of the WTC collapse was the fire retardant getting blown off by the impact). Trusses on the other hand are quite dangerous in a fire. https://community.fireen

I always thought the way we talk about "unsecured" services was wrong. I leave my door unlocked all the time and have no expectation someone will come by and test it. Were they to see it unlocked they'd have no expectation
