My hunch on why it is considered to be the 2nd in the cloud provider market is due to the most Enterprise size companies already being in bed with Microsoft with a lot of other products and there are a lot of incentives being thrown around

I too have had that uneasy feeling you are talking about. Letting go of total control over how things are being done as I went from just me hacking away, to leading a small team has been interesting. I tell myself (sometimes to my team dire

And you still didn't answer my question. Based on your other comments Chef is your tool of choice for setting up servers because you can hack and glue things together how you want. That's great for you I get it. I assume you are a

What would you consider has the bare minimum to get the job done then? Chef? Ansible? Salt? Puppet? Some homegrown monstrosity? I have used the first two and both of them have major problems with state and they can get super complicated if

But this isn't a programming language. it's a DSL that lets you get the job done. I get that you want to use flow control statements to make your life easier, but I feel that part of the reason why Terraform was made and has gaine

I cannot recommend Terraform enough for teams that are looking to gut their old infrastructure deployment methods. We used Terraform ~0.7 to build out our EU VPC on AWS. After a bit of pain understanding how to build modules we were finally

Honest question. How much would you pay to have something that manages the updates and setup for you and give you the sysadmin help when you need it?

Very cool on the Docker move by Travis. I still think Docker has a long way to go to over take OpenVZ. Docker is gaining steam, but it's adoption rate isn't wider than OpenVZ. Not yet. I agree that the hosting industry isn't

I never said Docker wasn't used at Groupon and just because it is used in some cases, doesn't make my point any less valid. It is going to take a lot more than a few years to take over OpenVZ/Virtuozzo in market share when mo

While the math doesn't really support paying off your mortgage first, I think for some people is more for the mental peace of mind that you don't have something hanging over your head. I can see why that would be the right choice

Spending money on a good chair is totally worth it. I picked up an Aeron back in 2006 and it is still going strong today. I think I paid around $700 for it, so that breaks down to $100 a year. I know up front costs like that are hard to do
