I think most commenters are missing two things: 1. It’s proteins and fats, not just protein. The site specifically calls out avocado as an example. 2. It’s from meat and vegetable sources. Other commenters have mentioned that you get mo

The food pyramid was the result of intense lobbying and political processes, not scientists and doctors.

It says 1.2-1.6 grams of protein and healthy fats per kilogram of body weight, from animal and plant sources (including milk). Is that really advocating for more meat?

I have a Roomba with a camera. It navigates very well, including figuring out where it’s at within seconds of being manually moved to a new location on a different floor.

That’s not a microservice vs monolith thing. That’s a client-side single-page app vs server-side rendering thing. Although, granted, I more often see microservice architectures with single-page apps than with server-side rendering.

Published author here (through O’Reilly, twice). A lot of people seem to be taking this as an indictment of the publisher. What I’m reading, though, is that the author didn’t make time to write the book and then lost interest. All the rest

The METR study has a unique approach to measuring productivity. It’s the only one I’ve seen that holds water. I don’t think I can do the approach justice here, but the short version is that they have the developer estimate how long a change

That just moves the complexity to the interactions between repositories, where it’s more difficult to understand and fix.

Apple’s Preview app (which has a very thorough PDF markup tool) does this right: it has an explicit “redact” tool which deletes the content it’s used on.

Evidence of bad reporting at one news agency is not evidence of bad reporting at a completely different news agency. The burden of proof is on you to demonstrate bad reporting, and vague insinuations don’t count.

@dang Given the number of times this has posted and the number of votes it’s received, perhaps it should be unflagged as being of interest to HN?

The article wasn’t about the AARP. That was just the hook. The article is about what you just said: there are many fewer guardrails, and why.

If you’re wondering what the trick is, it’s not perpetual motion. The train is loaded with ore and travels downhill, harvesting energy from regenerative braking. Then it returns empty uphill, using less energy than it gained.

Yes, health insurance costs rise every year. Partly due to increasing costs, but also due to the age of the insured. The question isn’t whether the ACA raised costs—those were always going to go up. The question is whether a the ACA made th

That doesn’t pass the sniff test. I was self-employed and self-insured when the ACA took effect and my premiums immediately dropped when I purchased through the Marketplace (and it wasn’t subsidized). It sounds like you either had junk in

Do you have any facts backing up that opinion? Because while I’ll agree that MBAs who ignore engineering nuance can be a problem, engineers are perfectly capable of running an org into the ground all on their own. In this case, Intel looks

That’s grossly exaggerated. Individual deductibles are limited by law to ~$6500 even on the worst plans. And no one is paying $3500 per month for individual coverage on one of those plans. The actual rates depend on age and zip code, but I’

Offshoring has been a thing for decades. Seriously, Yourdon wrote a doom-and-gloom book about it in the 90s. It was called “Decline and Fall of the American Programmer,” published 1992. Then in 1996, he wrote “Rise and Resurrection of the A
