Furthermore, you can't assume that because someone is unwilling to be a mentor that it's always the mentor's fault for not having enough patience or the right attitude. Sometimes the student just isn't worth investing yo

Of course, if the patch is helpful the response should be a positive one. I'm not debating that point. I'm debating the fake politeness that is expected when a patch is in fact rubbish. It's more impolite to lie to someone

"Hey John, thanks for contributing" - This is only true if you are actually grateful to John. Otherwise, John is wasting your time (if his patch is complete rubbish). "There's a lot of good there but this algorithm reall

There's a lot less demand for Mac OS specific applications on Linux than there is for Windows. A lot more people start with Windows and try to move to Linux (bringing their windows applications in wine with them) than start with Mac OS

My understanding is that X can run as a client on top of Wayland and thus you "strange" users can run remote X applications. "One would think that there existed better methods to remote access then just copying the image buff

"If you enjoy making your users put up with horrible DRM, I've seen multiple HN articles about how Linux support for Steam is in the works" It's an open beta right now with about 40 games listed under Linux.

Since Debian 4 I usually use synaptic as my package manager. It's really just a GUI frontend for aptitude but I've never had any issues using it.

My company develops for Blackberry as well and it is a mess. Our BB client lags far behind on features compared to our iOS/Android offerings and not for lack of development time. We spend triple the amount of effort developing for BB. As an

Quite a few people here in Ottawa still have Blackberries. Mostly government types and a lot of them carry an Android/iPhone as well. RIM signed a lot of very long term contracts with a good number of the large enterprises and various lev

Yeah, I guess my reply was kinda snarky. The simple fact is that every time sound didn't work out of the box on a Debian-based system (especially Ubuntu), removing pulseaudio was all that was needed to fix it.

Yes this. A million times this. Anyone who uses PHP seriously knows when accepting user input you have to do type checking rigorously. The manual states the input has to be a float. Of course in PHP this means it SHOULD be a float but why r

It stills shows a lack of rigour on the part of the developer. A simple "empty()" and "is_numeric()" check should be done on any user input expecting a float BEFORE you pass it off to a number formatting function expecting a float.

I think the major difference is that Microsoft is able to strongarm 99% of PC manufacturers due to their dependence on Windows, whereas Apple can only control their own hardware. A more apt comparison would be if Dell decided to enforce UEF
