A lot of John Carmack's code is open source. Also, what he used to do at id was not particularly groundbreaking; and the "open sourced" (by talking about novel algorithms for 3D rendering) the groundbreaking stuff at his popu

Did you read the comment you just replied to? Do you understand how a hash function works? In particular, the avalanche effect[1] prevents MD5 (or any other cryptographic hash) from being useful in this scenario, since fingerprints are matc

Couldn't you spoof a computer fingerprint? The hard part would be figuring out which computers are trusted, of course. Perhaps there is a timing attack that can be performed to find out.

To be honest, he is right. Not only what he said is correct, but cryptography is one of those strange fields where saying "I know more than you about this and I am right" is an acceptable thing to do.

Yes, I am serious. Maybe I don't get the "first iteration" idea, but it should not look like shit. Maybe that's just me, but if I'm making a website to attract users I'd rather make it, you know, attractive. &g

That's strange - I took another look at the JavaScript and it is indeed 131KB when uncompressed. I could have sworn it was 265KB last night. Anyway, including Bootstrap to use two containers with different background colours is a lack

I'm not only criticising their price. I'm writing off this whole thing as a 'joke', because honestly, that is what it looks like. Have you looked at the source code? You should take a look at this[1]. If you say "we

The point is not that it looks the same (although it does). The point is that videos load much, much faster than gifs. I've seen gifs converted to videos, with the video loading 30 times faster than the gif.

It'd be nice if that would change, though. Some forum software allows you to embed video from YouTube and friends, so it wouldn't be too much of a leap to embed short video clips using the mechanism described in the MediaCrush doc

I tend to agree with you, but apparently people _really_ like GIFs, irrationally. I built a service[1] that converts GIF files to HTML5 video (h264 MP4 + OGV) and people reacted very violently, arguing that "it's not a GIF".

We don't have a business model right now. At this stage we're just trying to build a service with the best possible experience for the users. Monetization will come later, we can afford to pay server and bandwidth bills for now. O

Okay, I understand that using Google Analytics when we're so pro-privacy is a bit of a weird choice. We've realised that self-hosting our analytics might be a better choice. I've created an issue[1] to discuss this matter. Id

Nope, kind of goes against the idea - there's no way for you to "discover" uploads to mediacrush. We don't even allow crawlers to index media pages.

Oh, didn't know about that. Well, that's the good thing about being open source - you have some knowledge we didn't have, so submit a pull request fixing it, I'll merge it, and we'll all be a little bit happier. Tha
