You have to remember that many of these researchers are funded by government money (eg, university researchers) or shareholders (eg, corporate labs) that may not be seeing any return on their investment. In some sense, Netflix is stealing

The machine learning guys have only a subset of the full dataset to work with. They have to send their algorithms to Netflix for testing on the full dataset. So it may be possible Netflix knows something they don't. It does seem quite st

You probably do need to get the police involved to some degree. My nephew had a similar problem a while back and the phone company would only release the phone number to the police. Here is a pretty good link: http://www.privacyrights.org

To clarify the title, all 50000 people were working as a team in a single game of chess. I originally thought this would be a pointless exercise, sort of like 50000 monkeys banging away at typewriters. It appears that was not the case. I

I never said there was anything random. Only non-deterministic. Of course, we are arguing philosophy, so experiments are useless.

I don't see how you can be a libertarian these days while addressing the current financial crisis without presenting some kind of rebuttal to the commonly held view that it was the do nothing (aka libertarian) government that was responsibl

Would be interesting to figure out # of CEOs divided by total student population for Ivys vs state schools. Since there are few Ivys I imagine the chance that a student from an Ivy becomes a CEO is still greater.

It is more just a set of techniques for generalizing theorems. At this point in time I would say there are a few roadblocks to doing some kind of data-driven probabilistic search for inductive proofs (like ACL2 does). The first is that th

One interesting difference is that if you are learning a proof, then you know when you are successful. At least for my research, I generated a bunch of small cases of the theorem I was trying to prove, then tried to learn the general case.

Pretty interesting.. actually looks somewhat related to my thesis: http://www.cs.utexas.edu/~jderick/thesis.pdf I'll have to look at it more closely when I get a chance. I was working on learning proofs, rather than programs, but I think

Can someone explain this? It seems the connection between quantum mechanics and free will are being dismissed out of hand. However, this seems like a deep question that probably has no simple answer. Is this just a 'religious' issue? Or
