I think the preallocate APIs sound like a cool idea. Perhaps there could also be some kind of 'my hashtable is an object' hint that could let the compiler do the same kind of optimizations on hashtables that it does on objects (assuming th

I've seen this implemented in a Lisp compiler before. It's surprisingly easy to do.

I like the concept but when I tried it out it didn't bring up anything interesting. It seems to have a heavy bias towards 'mainstream' news sites, which I rarely like to read. It seems like it is totally missing out on the 'long tail' whi

I notice this seems to be a web based portal to a linux environment? If so, anyone care to explain the advantages over say just offering a VNC server to the same linux env?

I think that a lot of the math we learn in middle and high school is not that useful. For example, when was the last time I used the quadratic equation, or had to calculate a derivative using the chain rule, or had to do a geometric proof

The real issue here is corruption. That's why you keep get these ridiculous bills. Lessig explained the issue in a recent post: http://lessig.tumblr.com/post/13119510676/me-mia-on-the-sopa...

I'm going to disagree here. One important distinction with automated sharing is that it is being displayed in a sidebar, outside the main feed. It isn't just adding spam. It is allowing you to dive deeper, see some details that maybe you

Concurrency is concerned with nondeterministic composition of programs (or their components). Parallelism is concerned with asymptotic efficiency of programs with deterministic behavior. Interesting distinction. My understanding is that

It seems like event based programming would be really cumbersome in comparison to having lightweight threads ala Erlang. Perhaps Javascript needs lightweight threads?

The government should create jobs to solve this problem. Unemployment is cruel and inefficient. Prioritizing reducing the national debt over employment is short sighted.

There is another closely related field that has plenty of real applications: formal verification. Essentially the task is to ensure no reachable state violates some property. The problem is the same as in chess, the reachable state space

In computer science academia, I have not heard of someone refusing to release their code. This seems quite bizarre to me. Of course it is not usually very polished code, but still there is no justification for hiding it.
