It is surprising to people outside the DoD, but most applications are exceedingly mundane - I would lump a lot of them under "database frontends," like personnel, finance, and logistics systems. One problem there is that, in many

As discussed elsewhere in this thread, acceptance of open source is very much an agency-by-agency deal within the DoD. IC orgs have pretty wide latitude to do what they want and NSA even more than others because of the primacy of their mis

For some reason the AF seems to have draconian web filtering in place, compared to other places I have experience with. In the late 2000's when I was still on active duty, we used to complain about having to look stuff up at home beca

Thanks for posting here, I was explicitly looking to see if anyone mentioned Fastmail after I saw it on that Github list. You might want to post something on your site if you haven't already, kinda like 1password did.

Had the same thought. The article mentions the 1815 but I have a 1515 which apparently has a C2538, which is one of the models listed. (Synology 1515 specs: https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/DS1515+#spec )

That just happened to me too (just accepted an offer for a new job). When they asked I politely told them I would not share that info, but I would tell them what range I'm looking for. It worked out fine.

Can we get a quick review? It looks really interesting but looking around the net I can't find many people talking about it. Does it wobble any? What joystick are you using on it? What kind of chair do you use with it? (Warthog + Ob

So, I see tons of unwrap() in Rust code I've looked at in the wild. I understand the concept of unwrap() and Option types. What would this type of code look like with proper error handling? It seems like it'd devolve into a ton

I didn't go look but that was going to be my guess. Since Debian is volunteer-ran, each architecture needs people to manage it, as well as having adequate hardware to test/build on.

As someone just getting into music theory the interactivity is extremely nice. The visualizations and sound just click for me.

As long as they don't change their format I'm ok with this. They seem to go to a great deal of trouble to discuss all the possible options, and criteria they used to write their recommendations. That allows me to judge for mysel

As someone self-teaching themselves piano, this is really fantastic. I already play drums but have no notion of what notes are what on a staff and piano keys and have been slowly teaching myself. The MIDI keyboard support really makes thi

I was an officer, but went to Officer Training School (OTS) which is a 12-week boot camp kind of approach, and I came to post similar thoughts. My dad was in the AF so I knew there was some level of BS to deal with, and just put up with it

All true. The Post-9/11 GI Bill was a large driver of this - if you've done your time, it's basically free schooling and all you have to do is sign up. The govt sends the tuition money directly to the school, you just have

I haven't found one, but I suspect the IASE page is only over HTTP for legacy reasons, as there are lots of things that download stuff automatically from DISA. I could be wrong though, and I agree that it should be served over HTTPS.

This extends to more than just planets, too. The University of Maryland Observatory runs a summer program for amateur astronomers that I signed up for this year, and we're learning how to do exoplanet transit detection. There are dat

I find it interesting that you still thought of RS as a choice. Has there been a RS you could go to for components or soldering stuff any time recently? I haven't seen one that wasn't more than just an electronics store like Bes

I use Discord for gaming (which seems to be their main market?) and it is amazing how nice it is. I wonder if Slack could just buy them and integrate the voice features into Slack, or introduce their own similar functionality. The voice s
