You seem surprised by this. I have worked for years and made great efforts to get to a point in life where I have a say in what time I do my work. Most jobs I have had I did not have a choice. In the United States.

I don’t see what the issue is here. The professor informs the class of office hours where the door is open. I used these times when I needed to ask a quick question or clarify something. In addition to email. The idea that these young adult

Maybe it’s getting too much traffic right now, but when I try to start a conversation in German, it just hangs after the first thing I say.

I would consider algorithms advanced. I’ve been programming professionally for 8+ years, and haven’t yet found a need to study algorithms. It seems like all the scenarios where I would need some scholarly algorithm knowledge have been abstr

Yes, and No. Yes, I still buy physical books to learn something new. I value being away from a screen. But I don’t buy the “Learn X” style of introductory material. All that info is online. I buy the dense deep-dives that are filled with ad

I gave it to a friend of mine, who also found it profound, and now they have given it to someone else. I probably will buy another copy.

4000 Weeks was a game-changer for me. I found the takeaways liberating, and more in-line with my perspectives in general. My ‘system’ now is just focusing on one major goal outside of the regular work/family stuff. I use tools for quic

I generate an n-dimensional just intonation pitch lattice, based on my study of the work of Ben Johnston. I like it because it’s kind of small, but tests several aspects of working in the language. * the program needs support for several nu

I think it’s a great exercise to come up with declarative abstractions over the DOM API. I had quite a bit of fun doing this. It only took a few hundred lines of JS to make a core for a useful web app.

I remember reading a similar HN thread in the past where someone didn’t understand how you build a html form without React, and that it seemed wild that someone would consider it. Framework, no framework, whatever works. I’m a fan of your a

Yes, it is terrible. I think you need to be an active .NET developer to communicate those subtle differences clearly. But we’re used to it being bad at this point. .NET Framework, Microsoft Teams, Visual Studio Code…

It would be interesting to see which categories would benefit from more granularity. For instance, I feel like I need only one toaster, one oven. But I have 3 different high-quality coffee grinders that I use for different purposes.

Right, it’s a perspective thing. I think your perspective is not wrong, but wanted to provide another for those reading: It’s good to remember kids aren’t just short adults. They are irrational, creative, come up with strange assumptions…

I’m having trouble relating to this post. General linux questions on a search engine end up on the Arch Linux wiki quite often. Really though, what Linux distro has better documentation than Arch?

I kinda fell in love when I started using zellij. I say this as a vim user, but it reminds me of what nano is compared to vim. With zellij, you can jump in blind and learn how it works. Compared to tmux, which is great, but like vim, requir

Dmenu was kind of nice when I was on a minimalist software kick. I get that modifying source code as an alternative to configuration is appealing to some. I suppose it’s nice for the maintainer, they don’t have to worry about handling more

There’s a book about this called “4000 weeks” (thanks for the correction). Basically, all the popular productivity hacks are nonsense, and just make you busier. You do this because of a fear of death. Accept that you will die soon, so just

I really wish more devs would treat errors as first class, the same level of importance as a success response. We had an error page at a previous job that had an <h1> OOPS!. Not sure who made it, but they didn’t think much of it, and

I’ve written tiny little apps in clojure and really enjoyed it. But I did find getting started to be a bit tricky. Cool to see stuff like this tool. I think one of the best getting started tools I’ve seen lately is Calva for VS Code.
