Not so incredible: The article is about what phone makers and carriers are choosing to ship. For the iPhone, those choices have already been made and are unlikely to change in the near term.

After all, if we live to reproduce, then anything that sets in after that event is irrelevant from an evolutionary standpoint. I imagine there are some people who reason that way, but they'd be ignoring the obvious survival benefits of ha

FWIW, color blindness is probably not an issue with that chart, as green is the only saturated color, and it seems to be of a dark enough value that it would not be confused with the other colors in the chart. You can preview an approximati

At some point in your career, you come to realize that unreadable code is bad code -- and that if you aren't writing readable code, you are a bad coder. Usually this realization comes when you are asked to fix something in code so horrible

Reminds me a little of the SIGGRAPH paper on hybrid images, where the distance at which you view an image determines, for example, whether you see a smiling or frowning person: http://cvcl.mit.edu/hybridimage.htm

Has that actually been shown? It would be ironic to use one unfounded fear to dismiss another unfounded fear, itself raised to dismiss a third unfounded fear.

Once you vaccinate for it, it becomes less deadly. Which means there is a new (computable) "most deadly" flu. And, presumably, there is an upper limit to the number of strains our immune systems can remember and defend against.

Of course, that means we'd be living in a future where the DNA sequence for the deadliest possible flu strain is computable. We'd have a pretty good reason to be alarmed every single day.

I think making the keywords all-caps is a mistake. Capital letters draw the eye -- all-caps doubly so, and at the expense of readability. Anything in all-caps had better be pretty damn important for the programmer to read. And while keywo

The idea of parameterized typefaces is an old one; I guess this example is interesting in that it attempts to parameterize between a serif and sanserif typeface.

As they say in the article, they didn't choose the responses to be neutral; they simply used common reasons people were voluntarily sending through their contact page. I agree that that is poor methodology, since it doesn't include the opin

The is_prime implementation can be further trimmed down rather comfortably: def is_prime(i): if i < 4: return i >= 2 if i % 2 == 0: return False return all(i % x != 0 for x in range(3, int(math.sqrt(i)) + 1, 2)

It only seems weird because we are used to scenes where the sun's rays are roughly parallel. In this picture, the sun represents a point light source, so the objects are lit from different directions. (Think of balls suspended in space aro
