It depends on your definition of "decent", but I wouldn't be surprised if there are many. This very article would be an example, if the author had not decided to release a free version and the Italian press hadn't picked it up. Prior to t

The snark was uncalled for; you could have made your point without attacking the man directly. And, in fact, you do so in the second half of your comment -- which means the first half was doubly unnecessary.

How would that be useful? If you want a domain and it's available, you can just register it. If it's not available, then listing it here won't change its availability and -- worst case -- will make it more expensive. A list of available a

I trust you've also seen the Wikipedia article cited elsewhere in these comments, where copying fictitious map entries was also ruled non-infringing? A map is ostensibly a presentation of facts, and while there are creative decisions invol

Here's a brilliant article from several years ago that crops up on HN from time to time -- an undercover report on car dealerships. It's long, but it's recommended reading if you are planning to buy a car, or if you have any interest in sa

Unless I'm mistaken, none of his suggestions use OS passwords. All of his suggestions protect against plugging the hard drive into another machine (except hidden folders, which only work against non-tech-savvy thieves, anyway).

I was wondering about that while reading the article... Does he really have a complete Amazon book price database on his PDA? If so, how does he keep it up-to-date? I imagine Amazon would object to someone constantly scraping their price

Be careful of what you wish for, though. Powerful companies would most likely lobby for changes to patent law that benefit powerful companies. For example, they might lobby to require the invention be a "real product", defined as N x 100,0

Right now, you can get opaque black plastic glasses with an array of pinholes. These work to correct a variety of focusing problems, since pinhole cameras have an infinite depth of field. The drawback is that pinholes let in very little l

I guess a bigger bummer would be if the planet's core doesn't rotate. Apparently, it's the Earth's rotating molten iron core that generates the magnetic field that protects us from harmful radiation.
