Thank you for articulating this so well. This is the core of why local-first applications can’t be effectively monetized. Users expect the best things for free or very cheap, and that’s mostly incompatible with the local-first concept.

Local-first isn’t a good model for projects that need to monetize. I’ve given this a lot of thought as well. I think it only makes practical sense for apps that exist to serve a public benefit.

I can’t upvote this enough. The average person doesn’t wan’t a semibroken digital god (ChatGPT), they want to know the weather (Siri, when it works).

Rather than stacking PRs, wouldn’t it be faster and safer to incrementally check in work to the mainline branch and keep it behind a feature flag?

This really is the way. Just one long append-only dump of all pertinent information. It’s the perfect complement to what’s in my head because I know where everything is!

Not for my Framework 13 laptop. There’s only one screen resolution option. Even when I don’t have it plugged into my 4K external monitor, Wayland’s fractional scaling looks atrocious on Ubuntu 22.04.

I’ve heard that the situation is better on KDE, but for better or worse I’m a GNOME user. I probably should have specified that!

Yep. It’s nearly a perfect product, but it’s a complete nonstarter for me because it’s not open source. I’ll happily stick with GIMP because of that.

My kingdom for Wayland fractional scaling that doesn’t make my apps blurry. It makes the feature a complete nonstarter for me.

I’m as big of a PWA advocate as any, and even I don’t think this will ever happen. PWAs are the most user-centric app platform, but it’s not conceptually intuitive to the average user. For that to change, PWAs need a strong marketing push.

Hello! I’m in FW16 batch 4 and excited to support your product and company. Thanks for driving innovation in this space! I’m holding out for an NVIDIA GPU, or at least some hardware to accelerate running local AI models. Do you have any exp

Trystero is magic. I am baffled that it doesn’t have thousands of stars on GitHub. I’ve used it in several projects and it Just Works. Thank you for the incredible library dmotz!

I often find storytelling in games to be a time-wasting distraction. For example, Slay the Spire would be significantly improved if the narrative elements were removed and I could just focus on the duels. I play games to play. If I want a s

Homebrew is my preferred package manager on Linux. It just seems to work more simply than apt or Flatpak for me, and it’s less context switching when I need to use macOS.

Preach! Open source maintainers don’t owe non-paying users a thing. Open source isn’t a cheat code for getting work done for free. It’s a means of sharing work that was already done so that it doesn’t need to be done again by others.

I strongly endorse Trystero ( https://github.com/dmotz/trystero ) for enabling P2P communication in web apps. It’s open source and leverages public infrastructure for matchmaking.

I imagine that there would be less of a chance of you learning Vim and sticking with something more common like VSCode. And if VSCode meets your needs, then it doesn’t seem like a problem that needs a solution. FWIW, I’m saying this as an e

Excellent post. This is why I’ve given up on trying to monetize my web game ( https://www.farmhand.life/ ) and just give it away for free as OSS. The money I’d make would not justify the effort needed to actually capture it.
