I'm totally down with attributing the worst things about America to America as a whole, even if they show up in other countries. We could use a little deflation.

My e-assist cargo bike is more practical but tops out at 20mph. Picture: https://twitter.com/jchris/status/312728928919896064 It was pricey for a bike but cheaper than the car I replaced with it.

Dropbox and iCloud have the same issue. They seem to be accepted by users. It is also possible to get status information telling you if you are fully synced or not.

Great answer. Tiny nitpick: the next version of TouchDB is called Couchbase Lite. We call it that b/c it is made by Couchbase and is lighter than TouchDB. Couchbase for Mobile is what we call the umbrella (including our Sync Gateway which a

It's not indefensible, it's radical. IMHO almost all productive enterprise should be 100% transparent. Good luck convincing the world of that. But most rational analysis of capitalism will get you to that conclusion.

I'm a successful startup founder (we're 100 people plus and making money) and I was lucky enough to have supportive parents as a kid. Although I didn't really start coding seriously until after college. It sounds like you are smart / articu

I didn't think it was so bad. I don't have time to go into detail, but briefly: If you read it as a critique of tech culture generally (and not Tim personally) it's interesting. The critique about polluting language is the crux of it. This

I'm glad you are happy with 20ms, to me it is slow... Probably the best thing about Cassandra is that it is written in Java, so it is easy to fork and add custom behavior. Of course this is orthogonal to performance.

This is good if it means Internet infrastructure gets treated with a new level of respect, as it is now the defacto emergency broadcast system.

I keep hearing Cassandra touted as fast, but I just don't see it. Instacluster brags about 17ms at the 99th percentile being fast, but where I come from that gets you thrown out of the running.[1] The Netflix benchmark linked above sees 10,

There are a lot of alternatives to iCloud. Most of them are just backend-as-a-service, but some of them are really sync engines. Dropbox has been around a long time, and is really popular for iOS file sync. My team at Couchbase has been bui

My solution is to (as much as possible) assume that women at technical conferences are technical. If they aren't, it's not awkward, generally. At least it's less awkward than the inverse. That is something that is in all of our power to

The TouchDB project was started at Couchbase, and since then we have ramped up our investment in mobile sync. The key thing about this project is that its designed to be tiny and boot fast. So it is written in Objective-C (and Java for Andr
