Benford's Law predicts the first digit will be 1 about 30% of the time, not 50% of the time. Your method also seems to depend heavily on the choice of starting and ending points. If I chose 1-99, then only 1/10th of the numbers in the inter

Those contracts were signed a long time ago. The first version of _Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone_ was released in 1997! Edited to add: Hindsight doesn't wear glasses. ;)

I wonder if this is what the founders of github expected from "social coding"?

Just curious: am I being voted down for suggesting that a society use electronic voting? If so, oh, the irony!

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I agree completely; history is both what actually happened in the past, and the narrative that we construct for ourselves from those events. What scares me about postmodernism is that many of its adherents s

I was being a bit facetious, yes. But voting electronically would solve this problem, assuming that you could trust the voting software! Public terminals could be provided for citizens without computers/smart phones/netbooks/tablets/implant

I don't understand why someone who invents a better combustion engine should deserve a patent while someone who invents a better computer algorithm should not. That doesn't imply that I think that every bit of programming deserves the prote

I don't much about Scala, but looking at the examples on http://www.simplyscala.com/ , it looks like the language has a lot of syntactic sugar. Scala users, is that an accurate assessment or I am misjudging it?

Many of the commenters at Ars Technica (which has been following this story closely) have similar opinions of Sony and of Mr. Hotz. Those praising the actions of Sony don't seem to understand any of the larger issues here. It doesn't matter

I think the idea of the disappearing caption was to let the reader guess the source of the screen grab without spoiling it. FWIW, I completely agree that adding more stuff to the page when the user scrolls to the bottom is just annoying.
