It still has some benefit: there's randomization within the kernel, knowing the base isn't always enough.

I wonder if some of what people interpret as hardware problems are actually software bugs that only trigger on new CPUs... I recently hit this testing pre-release kernels on my gaming PC, a 9900X3D: https://lore.kernel.org/l

I was very disappointed the SLAB_VIRTUAL patches stopped, there weren't really major objections to them. Recently there's a patch which tries to use clang's new alloc token thing to partition kmalloc: https://lore.

Where is the queueing happening? Maybe I misunderstood. I assumed you meant the hosts are queueing in the kernel because their userspace consumers can't keep up. In that case, XDP can help, because it can drop things out of the rx ring

I know the 737 allows the pilot to override that (force the wheels to raise even if the airplane thinks it's on the ground). I think most airliners do. I can't find a good succinct reference though. EDIT: Remembered Airbus exists

I've always been able to solve this problem more simply using IPv4 link-local addressing ( https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc3927 ), it doesn't matter if somebody abuses the same range because the outbound inte

If the tape drive failed close() in a way that did not deallocate the file descriptor, that was just straight up a bug. Retrying close() is dangerous, if the file descriptor was successfully deallocated, it might have already been re-alloca

Yeah, close() can't fail, but it can return an error. It's kind of odd. How could one fix that though? It seems pretty unavoidable to me because write() is more or less asynchronous to actual disk I/O. You could add finalize(

I meant the existence of ulimit was about partitioning resources. Imagine a primitive UNIX with a global fixed size file descriptor probing hashtable indexed by FD+PID: that's more what I was getting at. I have no idea if such a thing

    by jcalvinowens 1y ago

My guess is it was more about partitioning resources: if you have four daemons and 100 static global file descriptors, in the simplest case you probably want to limit each one to using 25. But I'm guessing, hopefully somebody who knows

    by jcalvinowens 1y ago

I'm not really sure, but I've always assumed early primitive UNIX implementations didn't support dynamically allocating file descriptors. It's not uncommon to see a global fixed size array in toy OSs. One downside to you
