I agree with this whole thread. I do use VS Code as my debugger frontend for C++ on Linux, but it's a real bummer compared to what's available on Windows. Hence this series!

I don't think so since you could do a front end over DAP, right? No linking required therefore. IANAL

Great catch! I wrote these quickly for a 1-week code jam, and it slipped through. Thanks, I've adjusted the post! :)

The main difference is that the FEN no longer only encodes castling to the king's or queen's side. It must fully encode which file for each side. Castling _rules_ are the same, just the castling _location_ can change. https:/

Congrats to the team! I've been regularly using Zig for a bit over a year now and it's been fantastic. I feel as though it's helped me grow as a programmer as well as has allowed me to build some cool stuff. It's a pleas

Same story here. I'm pretty young and I'm quite concerned about it as I age, but since I stopped drumming about 10 years ago, it hasn't progressed at all.

Love of the game. Computers can make chess more interesting, not less! I love working with them.

I just got this one as the first ad I saw now while browsing in an incognito tab. I really had no idea how far the quality has fallen, dang.

Completely agreed, and the version changes between v5 and previous versions are severe, and poorly documented. Extremely frustrating to work with!

I've definitely had a good experience writing Zig in VS Code with the CodeLLDB extension on Linux [0] and the Microsoft C++ [1] one on Windows. It's also got the Zig extension which comes with the Zig language server [2]. [0] htt

I use VS Code on Linux to debug Zig. Haven't tried the others you mentioned, but it just emits standard DWARF symbols, so I'm guessing if you can debug C/C++ you could probably also do Zig with minimal changes? I just use the

Somewhat related is R's CRAN[0], which has a team of maintainers who review submissions to ensure they're up to quality standards. [0] https://cran.r-project.org/

Good point about profilers' stack unwinders hitting much more code than a traditional debugger does, I'm sure that's mostly to blame. I've only been debugging a few thousand lines of code with my debugger so far, so we c

Yep! I've never seen anything besides DW_CFA_def_cfa, DW_CFA_offset, and DW_CFA_nop in my CIE definition instructions before. Not to say you shouldn't support them or that they don't exist - they just haven't come up for

Ah gotcha, in that case, as I said, I've never come across a DWARF expression while doing stack unwinding in the wild. Just registers and offsets :)

I've written a DWARF expression parser and stack unwinder and its not true that those three use-cases are enough to be robust [0]. Based on my own observations, you need to implement: - undefined - same value - offset(N) - val_offset(N

There's good reason to watch strong chess computers play each other! They can teach you some interesting techniques at the higher level (or so I've been told, I'm a lowly 1200 :P)
